2014 was a great year for turn-based strategy fans. Our Strategy Game of the Year found itself in excellent company with games such as Civilization: Beyond Space and Age of Wonders III. But where both of those behemoths bowed to fan expectations and stayed close to their roots, Endless Legend had no such restrictions. It was free to become whatever its makers imagined it to be. It introduced new ideas like cities that grow well beyond their founding hexagons and explored the use of the campaign map itself to create unique battlefields that reflect the nearby terrain. And it all worked. None of the innovations felt tacked on, or gimmicky, culminating in a game that can measure itself with the classics of old, as well as the new.
