It was an idea so brilliantly stupid that it could only be a success; Shovel Knight pits you against the evil Order of No Quarter, with only a sharpened gardening tool by your side. The game gleefully rejects overwrought storytelling, instead serving up tight platforming action and cosy 8-bit nostalgia done right. It's a game that wears its influences - from the likes of Mega Man, DuckTales and Castlevania - on its sleeve, but adds plenty of novel twists to ensure this is more than a fawning love letter to the 8-bit era. It might be punishingly hard at times, but it's a rewarding experience that appeals to all fans of platforming action, not just retronauts looking for a nostalgia rush.
