Tricks (cntd)
Aside from just straight up racing, there is also a freestyle mode where it is all about the tricks. In this mode you must keep an eye on your gas meter which depletes as time goes on. The only way to replenish this meter is by chaining your tricks together for big combos and picking up floating power-ups throughout the track. Lining up your ATV for the ramps is crucial for success and ‘pre-loading’ is a must if you want to get the most air and smoothest flow in and out of jumps. Pre-loading is where you shift the weight of the driver on the ATV back and then forward just before take off. This is very easy to pull off, using only the right analog stick but perfecting this will be a must in order to get the top score.
Customize your ride
With Pure supporting up to 16 racers either online or off in all modes, customizing your ride to make it unique is paramount. Thankfully Black Rock Studios is going to make it easier than ever to get make your ride your own. You can build a bike right from the ground up, from wheels to chassis and handle bars – every component affects performance or handling. So building your bike is more than just making it look cool, you can create an amazing trick quad, a wicked speed demon or a jack-of-all-trades if you want to be a flexible racer. No matter what type of ATV you choose in Pure, you can build it and make it your own.
The bike building feature is streamlined and easy to use. You can view all the components before you install them on your bike and the game will show you how your changes alter the performance of your ride. As you progress through the Pure world tour mode you will amass more and more components. Once all the components are available you can construct well over 65,000 different configurations. If you take the time, bike building can be a very deep feature and it will take some time to find out what works best for your racer. Of course, if you don’t want to spend so much time making your ride there is always the quick build options that can make you any assortment of bikes specializing in any type of racing style.
ATV Racing
Black Rock Studios found great success with the ATV off-road fury franchise and it looks like they are sticking to what they know best for this next project. An over the top feel like the old EA BIG games and a very impressive stock of ATV’s, courses, and gametypes lay a great foundation for a another successful franchise. 16 players on a course looks to be a bit hectic but smart track design and online co-op for all modes is shaping up to be very exciting. The stylized feel of the tricks and ridiculous speed offer a more exciting approach to the “hit one jump wrong and the race is over” simulation style that has been dominating the genre. If you are a fan of ATV racing games, or just like arcade racing action, be sure to check this one out when it hits store shelves this September.
