Dungeon Crawler Gone 'Space'

Sci-fi Follow Up

The title pretty much speaks for itself as Chris Taylor’s newest project is a play on his previous game, Dungeon Siege. Space Siege will be the next action-Role Playing Game for Gas Powered Games. For those not in the know, Chris Taylor is a game designer who is quite reputable throughout the gaming industry for designing games such as Dungeon Siege and Total Annihilation. He is also the founder of Gas Powered Games and was named the 30th most influential person for gaming on Gamespy. Having this kind of reputation, some people may even call him a perfectionist as perfection is what Chris Taylor is trying to accomplish for Space Siege. Using his previous title as a guideline to improve the game, fans of Dungeon Siege have a new installment to look forward to.

Moving out of the Dungeon

Dungeon Siege placed gamers in the deep underground of the dungeons, Space Siege obviously takes place in space. The story is basically how any space sci-fi story might start off. In the future, humanity has advanced enough to be able to get out into space and work on moving to other planets. After finding a planet to colonize life was peaceful for a couple of years until an invading alien race, known as the Karak, entered the scene. The Karak attacked the planet and nearly destroyed all life on it. Any remaining survivors fled back to Earth but to their dismay, the Karak pursue them. With Earth and its people unprepared for any surprise attack, the Karak ultimately destroy Earth. Some survivors manage to escape the destruction onboard a ship but not before the Karak are able to invade. This is where the game begins.

You play as Seth Walker and are given the role of humanity’s only hope. It is his job to protect the inhabitants of the ship as hordes of aliens and possibilities fill his path. Rather displeased with the whole Karak situation he is willing to risk his own humanity to be able to save his race from extinction. Yes, he is wiling to risk his own life as well but his life isn’t the only thing on the line.

Seth’s actual humanity will be left up to the player as the game allows for cybernetic upgrades to improve certain skills Seth will be able to use. An example is when Seth has to cross through a room filled with toxic gas. As a player you have a choice to make; You could either replace your lungs to withstand the gas or just take some drugs to take care of the poisoning. The point of these situations is to allow for the player to be more immersed into the single-player story and be faced with the difficult choice of retaining your humanity or to turn into an all-powerful cybernetic being. The developers have said that a special surprise ending will await anyone willing to retain their full humanity through the whole game.
