Top 50 Games Of The Last Decade: 50 to 41

Feature

Welcome to the first part of our week long countdown of the top 50 games of the last decade, as voted by the staff! Many arguments have ensued and the dust is far from settled, but please read on for entries 50-41.

45. Silent Hill 2 (PS2, 2001)

Developer: Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo
Publisher: Konami
Top 50 Games Of The Last Decade: 50 to 41

Silent Hill 2 is quite possibly the best survival horror game of all time. The reason is quite simple; it scared the crap out of us. It also managed to weave a great story and contained some incredible voice acting that was unexpected of the genre due to Resident Evil leading the way. Best of all was the creepy atmosphere and the effective use of sound to keep you on your toes. Oh and one more thing. Pyramid Head.

44. Sins Of A Solar Empire (PC, 2008)

Developer: Ironclad Games
Publisher: Stardock
Top 50 Games Of The Last Decade: 50 to 41

A challenging approach to the 4X - eXpand/eXplore/eXploit/eXterminate - space empire games. It adds something of a 3D element to the player's overall strategy - which one would think should be an integral part of a space empire. The only downside is the severely limited choice of faction: Only 3 in an entire universe? Regardless, Sins of A Solar Empire is a fun and rewarding experience that doesn’t shy away from difficulty either - plus we're fond of gigantic spaceships exploding before our eyes.

43. Crysis (PC, 2007)

Developer: Crytek
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Top 50 Games Of The Last Decade: 50 to 41

"Can it run Crysis?" - The faceless exclamation of a technological era. When Crytek released Crysis in 2007, it caused widespread computer meltdowns and the dropping of many jaws in amazement at its visuals. The technology of the Crytek Engine was advanced far beyond its years. Behind all the tech goodness, it was also a solid, well-rounded shooter with an involving story and fantastic gameplay. Can your computer run Crysis? If so, play it. You won’t regret it, and your eyes certainly won’t forget it either.

42. NBA 2K2 (Dreamcast, 2002)

Developer: Visual Concepts
Publisher: SEGA
Top 50 Games Of The Last Decade: 50 to 41

As the only sports title and the only game from the Dreamcast in this list, NBA 2K2 has a lot to live up to, though many would agree it certainly holds its own. This was the last of Sega’s 2K basketball franchise on the Dreamcast and without question the most successful. Even though the game went multi-platform it will be remembered for being one of the best titles of a console whose life was cut too short and a franchise that still dominates the genre as part of 2K Sports.

41. Assassin’s Creed II (X360, 2009)

Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
Publisher: Ubisoft
Top 50 Games Of The Last Decade: 50 to 41

All our geeky lives we have wanted to be a deadly assassin, and the Assassin's Creed series has let us realise this dream. The second installment stands out for its detailed historical depiction of 15th century Florence and Venice, refined combat and exploration gameplay and a personable protagonist in Ezio Auditore. Involving its players in modern day conspiracies has proved a popular hook, but not enough to distract from the crazy-genius inventions of Da Vinci that add such finesse to this sequel. Also, climbing to the top of Giotto's Campanile in Florence and leaping off the top is just one of those gaming moments that we cannot forget.

That just about rounds up your list for today. As was said, check back tomorrow as we will be revealing the games that placed at 40-31. Please use the comment section below to voice your opinions!
