Windows/PC

As 2007 comes to a close, we look around to find ourselves in the middle of a tumultuous time of change, revival, and the most amazing gaming the industry has offered to date. The list of best seller releases for 2007 is substantial for all available platforms from the family oriented Wii to the troubled start of the Playstation 3. Through it all, PC gamers couldn’t help but wonder if this was the beginning of the end for rock solid PC titles that could rival the consoles during the ongoing war between the platforms. With Microsoft and Sony duking it out blow for blow and Nintendo standing off just out of the way dominating the 'family' market, the lone PC was left on the sidelines hoping to salvage their own titles.

Game developers thankfully have not abandoned our cause completely, however! Over the year, we saw the release of titles that managed to make their way over to the PC side of the fence that served as a reminder that we aren’t out of this completely.

Overlord

Codemasters and Triumph Studios hand you the reigns of evil as you take on the dark task of becoming the Overlord. This humorous title mixes RTS and RPG elements to create a lighthearted look at being as evil and oppressive as possible. You rebuild your Dark Tower, fill your treasure chest and grow your horde of minions to its former glory after having seen it being sacked by a group of goody-goody adventurers. Overload is exciting, action-packed and - above all - fun. In the words of your loyal minions, 'For the Overlord!'

The Witcher

Atari hits it big, taking a gamble by teaming up with a fledgling developer CD Project. Based on a book series by the Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher takes us to Medieval Europe to follow the mysterious journeys of Geralt, a legendary Witcher who is as good at wielding a blade as he is at wooing the ladies. The Witcher is a step below Oblivion, but not a big step. Reason enough to have it in our list of top games of 2007.

World in Conflict

World in Conflict - Massive Entertainment and Sierra teamed up to bring us a worrisome alternate reality; What if the Cold War had not ended, but instead escalated? In 1989, the Berlin Wall still stands strong and Soviet Russia is on the move as it aggressively pushes its way into East Germany, taking NATO completely unprepared for the assault. The player ends up in the thick of the fight, taking Real Time Strategy to new heights.

Crysis

Crytek Studios and EA Games combine two of the worst case situations this world can experience into one shiny package. First, a massive asteroid impacts the earth, which is never a good thing. Second, the said asteroid bursts open and hordes of aliens begin to pour forth, effectively starting the invasion of Earth - also not a good thing. Thankfully, The US and North Korea had already sent troops to the area. Of course, the real question is, are they going to play nice together? Crysis is a fantastic game and only _just_ missed the first place.

Bioshock

2K and Irrational Games took us to a place that only existed in nightmares. Dubbed as the 'Spiritual' successor to the extremely popular System Shock 2, Bioshock breaks new grounds on environmental imagery and pushes the limits of imagination as you fight your way through the submerged city of Rapture.
