What a year it's been!

The year 2007 will go into the history books as one of the best years for gaming ever. A year after their release, the Next-Gen consoles are really starting to mature. Blockbuster titles such as Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Super Mario Galaxy have shown what developers can do with today's hardware.

We had a hard time picking titles and we'd like to think we have some surprises in store for those who felt that the same games would top every Game of the Year special on the Net. Creativity was well rewarded by our team. You may read some reviews on Hooked Gamers where the individual opinion of the author about a particular game is positive but not ecstatic. When you do, keep in mind that - much like our visitors - Hooked Gamers is made up of many such individuals. Their combined opinion was used to create this special.

Gaming in 2007

The biggest gun
Oddly enough, it is not the biggest gun that is reigning supreme in the console market. After spending years at the bottom, Nintendo is now comfortably sitting at the top of the food chain. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 is a pretty good second, largely due to the incredible success of its flagship title Halo 3. The overall loser is Sony. Too late, too expensive, too hard to program for, too few games... A lot of “toos” there that gamers had not expected from the former King of the Hill, but Sony was simply too confident and ambitious. Their gun is bigger, making it a unwieldy and unloved in an era where modesty is hip again. That is not to say that they will be on the losing end next year. Developers are certain to tap into the PS3 powerhouse, perhaps giving it a longer breath as we get closer to the next Next-Gen consoles. Oh, and about that, can we stop calling them Next-Gen now?

The fat lady didn't sing
Those who believed that the PC would be left out in the cold, were sorely mistaken. Some fantastic looking games came out for the Windows platform this year. NVIDIA and ATI blessed PC gamers with some incredible graphical power and dual core CPUs are slowly becoming mainstream. Instead of being overwhelmed by the onslaught of the console wars, PC was left standing steady. With barely a hiccup, the platform picked up speed and is now pacing along with the other gaming platforms. Any analyst predicting that the PC will take the creative and technical lead in a year or two, has our money. Gaming technology has always developed much faster on the PC than it has anywhere else and we see no sign of change here.

Former champion bested a second time
On the handheld field, Sony again hangs its head in shame. Nintendo’s DS Lite may look like the older sibling but the PSP is badly lagging behind, unable to keep up with its competitor. That is not to say that there were no good games released on the PSP, though many we have listed here are ports or existing franchises. The same could be said about the titles we have listed for the DS. The difference is that none of them ‘feel’ like they are ports or existing franchises. The little portable console is a hotbed for creativity right now, as is its big brother Wii.

We hope you will have as much fun with our Game of the Year 2007 special as we had creating it!
