Sinfully cheap for the masterpiece that it is.

Puzzle game with a plot that works (cntd.)

The plot centres around a maniacal corporation called World of Goo, that manufactures gooey drinks for the everyday consumer. You, the goo balls, curiously venture towards pipes at the end of each stage that lead to who knows where. Of course, being an actual person and not a ball of goo, you become aware that each pipe is a gateway to the mighty World of Goo factory. That is the backbone at play, and of course as you go things will progress to further exciting twists and turns.

Best 2D graphics in recent history

Still on a roll come the visuals. The artwork and style of this game is beautifully bizarre. Strange and disturbing cut-scenes move the game along with a very unique and likeable quality, while the main game is conveyed with some of the best 2D graphics I’ve seen in recent memory. Everything is polished and looks excellent. This is especially impressive due to how drastically the themes in the game alter with each passing chapter. One moment you’re playing in a quiet summer setting, and the next through a cold and frightening factory. Everything feels perfect, and the conveyance of the atmosphere is top notch.

And amazing sounds as well

If you think that I am gushing uncontrollably then you may want to look the other way, because things are still looking up. One of the best parts of this already extraordinary title is it’s amazing soundtrack. Each tune fits it’s designated level or cut-scene, and adds even more to the dark mood of the game. Although all of it was done digitally, the sounds are so lush and vibrant that you would expect it to have been stripped from a high-budget film. I really can’t say enough about this area, you really have to hear it for yourself to believe just how excellent it is.

Oh, some shadows loom over it after all

There are of course some minute problems. For one, when you are dealing with multiple goo types simultaneously it can be difficult to grab the one you need. The only reasonable way to solve this would be to add more button commands however, and I’m not sure that would have been a feasible solution, as it would have taken away from the ease of the controls. Another issue came apparent when trying to get the best possible rank for each level. Sometimes you only realize you have failed after you’ve reached the goal, and at that point the option to retry disappears and you must exit and re-enter to try again. Both problems really only come down to convenience, and in the grand scheme of things, I can’t say that they detracted much of anything from the game.

Sinfully cheap

It took me awhile to ground my opinion of this game, but in hindsight I really can’t see anything truly reprehensible in this package. It has only the most minor of flaws, and even those do not take away from what is a truly remarkable experience. It almost feels like a sin to be getting this at such a low price. While it is among the most expensive games on the Wiiware service at the moment, I can testify that it is more than worth the price tag. If you consider yourself a fan of video games, then I send out my highest recommendations for you to give this game a shot. You won’t be disappointed.
