Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice

Packed
Disgaea 3 is packed with content in general. The main story is about 30-40 hours long depending on how much time you put into your characters. There are multiple endings that can be seen and an epilogue that offers dozens of new maps and secret characters to gather. Hundreds of different characters can be created and then potentially leveled to 9999. Every item in the game can be entered and strengthened through the Item World. There is also a new Class World to further strengthen your characters’ abilities. Finally, Disgaea 3 is offering DLC in the form of new characters from many of NIS’s past games. The game could eat up your time indefinitely.
Graphics and sound
The thing you will notice about Disgaea 3 is that it doesn’t look like a Playstation 3 game. The graphics just aren’t up to snuff compared to the other games on the system. I did pop in the original games for a quick comparison to see if they had improved at all, and there was a definite increase in sharpness. The character portraits are also nice and clean but character models and backgrounds lack the graphical quality that the new generation offers.
What is most odd about the graphics is that Disgaea 3 supports 1080 pixel resolution. There just doesn’t seem to be a need for it when NIS had the potential to really make the series shine in the graphics department. I would have loved to see these characters look exactly like their portraits so that the models could emote for themselves. Of course, no Disgaea game has ever been praised for its graphics. Many compared it to a Super Nintendo game when it was first released.
Sound, on the other hand, is topnotch. All the characters are well voiced and stand out. They are able to switch between the heavy-handed stuff and the fluff with ease. The music is also quite good with appropriately evil melodies and orchestral hero ballads. Each song matches what is going on in the story. The only weakness is the sound effects. Explosions and attacks feel a little muted and sometimes don’t convey the power behind them. It is not a major problem, but it takes away some of the satisfaction when you hit an enemy with a particularly powerful attack.
Great one
For any fan of strategy RPGs, Disgaea 3 is a good game to pick up. For any fan of the Disgaea series, the game is a great one to pick up. Its less than stellar graphics don’t detract from it, and there is more strategy in the game than in any of the series before.
