I'm Tony Montana!
The summer of 1983 seems like a long time ago for some and just yesterday to others. Regardless of if or how you remember 1983, one of the highlights of that year in movies was the release of the Blockbuster crime epic Scarface. Since its debut on the silver screens, the film has influenced many crime films and television shows that we see today, and now it has spread its influence to the virtual world of gaming.
Who put this thing together? Me, that's who!
Last year, in May 18th, at the E3 in Los Angeles, CA, Vivindi Universal Games and Radical Games publicly announced the development of Scarface: The World is Yours, which will be released in the third quarter of this year. Initial reaction to the announcement was concern that Scarface: The World is Yours, was simply an attempt to compete with GTA: Vice City while riding the continuing trend of classic movie based games (i.e. The Warriors). With recent news and announcements now circulating, those worries are beginning to ease into anticipation.
You think you can take me?
The original movie would not have been the experience it was without the talent of actor Mr. Al Pacino, and the biggest news from Radical games was the conformation of not only Al Pacino "lending his likeness" to the game, but also the signing of nine other well known Hollywood actors, including two original cast members of Scarface, Steven Bauer and Robert Loggia, who played characters Manny Ray and Frank Lopez. They will be joined by Jay Mohr, Cheech Marin, James Woods, Miguel Sandoval, Robert Davi, Michael Rappaport and Michael York. With a star studded cast and Al Pacino himself once again playing the role of Tony Montana, it is almost certain that the feel and experience of Scarface will be genuine to say he very least.
This is paradise, I'm tellin' ya!
The plot of Scarface: The World is Yours begins where the movie left off. But, instead of Tony Montana meeting his fate at the hands of rivals thugs, the game plays on the "what if" mentality. The game begins with Tony picking up his weapon and fighting back the siege of thugs sent by his rival drug lord Alejandro Sosa. Thus, Scarface: The World is Yours acts as an extension of the Scarface movie allowing Tony to live through the attack and taking refuge somewhere in the Caribbean. Upon your return, you find your empire, fortune, and reputation shattered. This becomes the driving force of gameplay as you return to Miami and begin to rebuild the shattered remains of your lost empire.
Make way for the bad guy!
As the player guides Tony through the steaming and often seedy locations of the Miami underworld, you must undertake various tasks and missions that will slowly allow Tony to return to power as the Kingpin of Miami. Missions will require you to make business deals, produce and distribute material and smuggle, while you are also avoiding both rival cartels and the DEA.
I never f**ked anybody over in my life who didn't have it coming to them
Gameplay has unfortunately already been compared to the infamous GTA series, especially GTA: Vice City. Though some gameplay aspects are going to be similiar, don't expect to have free range over all the people of Miami. Scarface: The World is Yours, is about Tony Montana and his climb back to the top of the criminal underworld of Miami. It is not about how much chaos can be caused in the streets, running from the police and gunning down whoever gets in your way. Scarface: The World is Yours recreates Tony Montana's unique code of morals by not allowing the player to mow down innocent bystanders in a hail of random gunfire. If the player points a weapon at a bystander, Tony will lower his weapon and hold true to his moral belief that you only kill those who have it coming to them.
You wanna waste my time, OK? You wanna play rough?
Due to the extreme violent nature of the Scarface movie, it is expected that such violence will carry over to the Scarface: The World is Yours game as well. Right now the anticipated ESRB rating will be 18+ due to ultra violent content, language and, of course, drug and alcohol references. With an optimistic release date sometime in the 3rd quarter of 2006, Scarface: The World is Yours is certainly a title to look out for.
