Bungie Aerospace is far from what we expected...
So Bungie Aerospace actually has nothing to do with Aeroplanes or Space. Turns out that the term which was trademarked back in early 2010 is far from what fans expected to get from the now legendary games developer.
In a recent press release Bungie revealed that, after much hype surrounding the new venture, Bungie Aerospace is actually a partner program in which Bungie themselves will team up with social and mobile developers, giving them the “creative freedom and resources they need, like access to the Bungie.net platform and an audience with the incredible Bungie community.” Essentially, while not clearly stated in the press release, Bungie will act as the publisher for the eventual products, providing the money, resources and ultimately the fan base to market them to.
For those of you who remember the Bungie ARGs you might know of the small dev studio Harebrained Schemes, run by one Jordan Weisman responsible for the I Love Bees ARG as well as many other small projects. These guys will be Bungie's first indie developer team to work under the Aerospace banner and while it's definitely an interesting partnership we won't be seeing the results until their new game “Crimson” comes to iOS and Android this summer.
While you can check out the press release over at the Bungie.net there's not much more information you need to know. While most of you may be less than thrilled by the news that Aerospace isn't actually Bungie's super new blockbuster hit space combat simulator, it's nice to see that some of the big hitters are finally realising the extreme potential behind indie developers. Lets just hope this new partnership pays off...
