The official Princess Bride game.

As you wish...

The film ”The Princess Bride”, released in 1987 and adapted from the novel by William Goldman has become something of a cult film and a classic amongst fantasy fans and film buffs, as well as a source of countless hilarious (and very odd) quotes. Featuring extraordinary characters, humour, adventure and romance, it is a story about true love.

A young farm boy Westley and a beautiful girl Buttercup fall in love. While Westley ends up on a swashbuckling adventure with pirates, Buttercup becomes enmeshed in the evil scheme of Prince Humperdinck. She is kidnapped by a tiny but devious Sicilian, Vizzini, and his gang: Inigo, a swordsman who's dedicated his life to avenging the death of his father and Fezzik, a giant with a great (literally) ear for rhymes. Before the film can reach its fairytale ending, Westley must save Buttercup. There are prince's men and strange creatures to battle, torture to withstand, but in the end, true love proves stronger than death itself. Now you might get the opportunity to play through the adventure that has pirates, swashbuckling, monsters and torture, as well as a beautiful princess, true love and some kissing (when you're older, you don't mind so much).

A miracle pill with a chocolate coating?

Worldwide Biggies is making a “series” of games based on this much-beloved romantic adventure film. The Official Princess Bride DVD Game featured exclusively on the film’s 20th Anniversary DVD from MGM Home Entertainment and gave the gamers the first taste of the upcoming full game and a chance to earn some redeemable gems at the same time.

The downloadable game titled True Love and High Adventure - The Official Princess Bride Game is supposed to be released in separate parts. Episode One of the game should be available before the end of this year at www.princessbridegame.com while the full downloadable game will be available in April 2008. There are no plans for a retail release at this point.

True Love and High Adventure – The Official Princess Bride Game follows the storyline of the movie. In addition to this, there is little information about the game, as of yet. Neither is it know whether any of the original film actors will return to voice parts for the game (but Inigo's famous line, ”My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.” would never be quite the same without Mandy Patinkin speaking it). Perhaps you'll be able to challenge the six-fingered man into a duel, climb the Cliffs of Insanity or run away from ROUSes (Rodents Of Unusual Size). Or perhaps you must use your wits to choose the wine goblet that is not poisoned, or to complete rhymes.

The game is supposed to appeal to the casual audience, and especially to women who grew up watching the film and fell in love with the dashing heroes. In addition, the game-makers hope to attract not only fans of the film but also a new generation of players. What we've seen thus far of the graphical style of the game, it must be said that the designers have managed to do away with everything that made the heroes dashing to female viewers. The cartoony graphics might not be something that would appeal to most women and may even turn away many fans of the movie who have got used to more sophisticated look in games.

A fairy-tale ending or lemon juice in paper cuts?

“The Princess Bride” certainly deserves to be made into a good game and we can only hope that Worldwide Biggies is going to be able to pull it off. A step away from the cartoony graphics would go a long way in achieving this goal. Also, it would be beautiful if the spirit of the movie was carried over to the game and even the less skilled casual players were allowed to reach that fairy-tale ending...
