Away From Keyboard - Magic: The Gathering - Secrets of Strixhaven
Back to School
Class is back in session. While our first visit to Arcavios focused on the foundational rivalry of the five colleges, Secrets of Strixhaven delves into the restricted sections of the Biblioplex. It is a set that balances the academic "instants and sorceries matter" identity of the original with gritty new ways to utilize your spells. Whether you're a Silverquill wit or a Witherbloom biologist, here is everything you need to know about the new and returning mechanics of the set.
Study Hard: New Mechanics
Prepare and Prepared
The standout innovation in Secrets of Strixhaven is the Prepare mechanic. It's a designation given to permanents (usually creatures) that allows them to "hold" a spell for later use. When a creature with a Prepare spell becomes Prepared (often by entering the battlefield or through a triggered ability), you generally get to create a copy of a specific instant (although otherabilities can be present) or sorcery—printed on the card in a special frame—in exile. As long as that creature remains on the battlefield and prepared, you can cast that exiled copy. Once you cast it, the creature is no longer prepared. Think of it as a "spell-battery" that adds a layer of on-board tricks your opponent has to respect.

Paradigm
For the students aiming for a Master's degree, Paradigm offers long-term inevitability. Paradigm is a keyword found on high-impact spells (often with the Lesson subtype). Once a spell with Paradigm resolves, it creates a delayed triggered ability that lasts for the rest of the game. At the beginning of each of your first main phases, you get to create a copy of that spell in exile and cast it. It represents a fundamental shift in the game's "rules," allowing you to repeat powerful effects every single turn without spending a card.

Opus
Prismari students have always been about the "Big Spell" lifestyle, and Opus rewards that ambition. Opus is a triggered ability that checks the mana value of the spells you cast. If you cast a spell with a mana value of 5 or greater, the Opus ability triggers, providing a bonus like +1/+1 counters or extra resources. It's designed to make those clunky, high-cost finishers feel even more explosive.

Repartee
These abilities trigger whenever you target a creature with a spell. It rewards the "cutting wit" of Silverquill by doubling the effectiveness of your combat tricks and removal.

Infusion
A keyword that keys off life gain. Whenever you gain life, Infusion abilities trigger, turning your defensive recovery into offensive pressure—usually by draining the opponent or buffing your pests.

Back to Basics: Returning Mechanics
Flashback
The passion for the power of the past is expressed in Strixhaven through the returning Flashback mechanic, which gives instant and sorcery cards in your graveyard another chance to have an impact.

Converge
Reflecting the school's diverse student body, Converge returns to reward you for spending as many different colors of mana as possible. It's a perfect fit for the five-color "Archavios" decks that try to bridge the gap between the rival colleges.

Final Syllabus
Secrets of Strixhaven feels like a "Level 2" course in Magic design. By moving away from simple "cast a spell" triggers and into the realm of Prepared permanents and Paradigm shifts, Wizards of the Coast is challenging players to manage their resources over multiple turns.
Grab your book bag and sharpen your quill—the midterm is coming, and in this set, "failing" usually involves a one-way trip to a Witherbloom swamp.
