Away From Keyboard - Lorcana: Winterspell
The Frost Sets In
The narrative of Winterspell picks up exactly where we left off. After venturing into the Inkwell Caverns, an Elsa glimmer attempted to use her ice magic to halt the spread of the mysterious "Flood" vines. Unfortunately, the spell spiraled out of control, blanketing the entire realm in a perpetual winter. This isn't just flavor text; the "Winterspell" event permeates every corner of the set, from the "frosted" card treatments to the cozy, snow-filled artwork.
While Whispers in the Well felt like a gothic investigation, Winterspell feels like a "pitstop" in the story—a chance for characters to huddle around hearths, engage in snowball fights, and adapt to a world made of ice.
New Faces and Frozen Favorites
Winterspell finally brings some highly anticipated franchises to the table. Most notably, Pocahontas makes her Lorcana debut alongside Meeko and Flit. These cards lean heavily into evasive maneuvers and peaceful protection, mirroring the film's themes.

We also see the arrival of the DuckTales crew in force. Darkwing Duck and Launchpad McQuack are the headliners here, with Darkwing bringing a gadget-heavy playstyle that rewards players for using and banishing items. Fans of Lilo & Stitch will also be thrilled to see Angel (Experiment 624) joining the fray, offering new synergies for "discard-heavy" Emerald and Sapphire decks.

The Chase: Epic and Iconic Rarities
For the collectors, Winterspell cements the new rarity structure first teased in late 2025. While we're all used to the hunt for Enchanteds, this set pushes the boundaries with the inclusion of Epic and Iconic varieties that started in the Fabled set (set 9).
● Epic Rarity: Sitting comfortably between Legendary and Enchanted, Epic cards are becoming the "gold standard" for deck bling. They feature an "open-air" borderless frame and a distinct rainbow foil treatment that makes the artwork pop without the ultra-low pull rates of an Enchanted.
● Iconic Rarity: This is the new pinnacle of Lorcana collecting. There are only two Iconic cards in the entire Winterspell set—Pocahontas – Peacekeeper and Moana – Curious Explorer. These cards are true "trophies," featuring unique 3D hot-stamp effects and a custom "lore star" foil pattern. Pulling one is essentially the Lorcana equivalent of finding a Golden Ticket.

Strategic Deep Freeze: Underdog and Locations
The most significant mechanical addition is the Underdog keyword. For a long time, the community has debated the "first player advantage" in Lorcana. Underdog is Ravensburger’s direct answer. Cards with this keyword receive a cost reduction if you are playing second on your first turn, ensuring the second player isn't immediately put on the back foot.

Locations also take center stage in this set. While they were introduced in earlier sets, Winterspell pushes them to the forefront. Ruby and Steel decks now have powerful synergies that reward you for holding specific ground, while Emerald has evolved into the "anti-Location" ink, with cards designed to punish opponents who over-invest in their board state.
Upgrading the Boost
The Boost mechanic, which defined Whispers in the Well, hasn't been forgotten. Instead, Winterspell introduces cards that "upgrade" the mechanic. New cards allow you to move cards from under your characters (where they were placed via Boost) directly into your inkwell. This turns the temporary power-ups of the previous set into long-term resource advantages, creating a natural bridge between the two expansions.

Winterspell is a cohesive, beautifully illustrated set that feels like a love letter to Disney’s winter aesthetics. While it may lack the standalone starter decks seen in previous releases, the individual card power—and the sheer prestige of the new Iconic pulls—ensures it will leave a lasting mark on the meta.
Whether you’re looking to balance your games with Underdog or simply want to hunt down that elusive Iconic Pocahontas, Winterspell is a refreshing, if chilly, addition to the Lorcana library. Pack your mittens; the ink is freezing over.
