Away From Keyboard - Magic: The Gathering - Assassin's Creed

Feature

Assassin's Creed has been a staple within the Ubisoft stable since the original title was released in 2007. Sending players across the globe and placing them in various historical cities, players have taken on the role of an assassin. They have then stealthily moved throughout the city, keeping to the shadows and the rooftops to complete their tasks. With a range of characters and scenarios, it makes sense that the team at Wizards of the Coast have joined with Ubisoft for the latest Universes Beyond set.

We at Hooked Gamers were lucky enough to receive an invite to the launch of the latest Magic: The Gathering - Universes Beyond set based on the Ubisoft series Assassin's Creed. The setting of the State Library of Victoria was perfect, the quietness in the location being comparable to sneaking around various locations within the Assassin's Creed world. Except on this occasion, the victims we were hunting were other Magic players.

New and returning mechanics

Freerunning
This is the main new mechanic and somewhat signifies the rooftop running that the Assassin's Creed series is known for. Freerunning allows players to cast a spell at a reduced cost if the player has dealt combat damage on their turn with an Assassin.

Historic (returning mechanic)
It wouldn't be Assassin's Creed without some focus on History. The Historic mechanic refers to cards that have the Legendary designation or Sagas.

Disguise (returning mechanic)
Anonymity is somewhere in an assassin's top three weapons, probably behind information and a decent spear. If a card has disguise, you can cast it face down, keeping its identity hidden. It becomes a face-down creature spell, which means it's a colorless 2/2 and has no name or creature types. Any time you have priority, you can turn a face-down permanent face up for its disguise cost.

Cloak (returning mechanic)
As well as a disguise, this is no better way for an Assassin to blend into the surrounds than with a cloak. If you're instructed to cloak a card, put that card onto the battlefield face down. The resulting permanent is a 2/2 colorless creature with no name, no creature types, and no mana cost.

The cards

Being a Universes Beyond set, there are no Planeswalkers. However, each of the protagonists from the Assassin's Creed series make an appearance.

● Altair
● Ezio Auditore
● Ratonhnhake:ton
● Edward Kenway
● Kassandra
● Eivor
● Bayek
● Basim
● And of course, Desmond Miles

Each are lovingly depicted within the Assassin's Creed set as playable cards and some in the limited Art Cards.

Lands
If you have played any of the Assassin’s Creed titles, many of the Lands will have a familiar look, such as the Brotherhood Headquarters in Monteriggioni. As always, the locations that are depicted are beautifully drawn.
