The popularity of cozy gaming continues to grow, with 90% of Australians playing video games to de-stress and relax according to the Australia Plays 2023 report. Favoured genres within the cozy gaming category include farming simulation games, and town-building or home-building games, giving players the opportunity to design a personal haven and leisurely tend to crops.

MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV's (FFXIV) Island Sanctuary mode, released with the Endwalker expansion, also offers an escape for cozy gamers. Here, Warriors of Light can take a break from saving the world, and enjoy the simple pleasures of island life. Cultivate a wild island by gathering materials, growing crops, tending to animals and more.

So what is FFXIV’s Island Sanctuary?
For those who haven't yet planted crops on their own sanctuary, the Island Sanctuary is a solo experience available once the Main Scenario Quests of the Endwalker expansion are completed. A quest called "Seeking Sanctuary" will appear in Old Sharlayan allowing players access to their Island Sanctuary.

Upon arrival, players will be tasked with cultivating the wild island through a myriad of tasks, including gathering materials, planting, watering, and harvesting crops, feeding and raising animals, and building new structures.

Players can create their own personal paradise through customisation options such as allowing their minions to roam free in the hamlet or using furniture items to decorate.

Gathering materials:
As players leave their hamlet and explore the vast island, they will be able to find materials to gather. Cutting trees can grant various logs, sticks, and fruit, while foraging in bushes can grant fibres and vines. Gathered materials can be used to improve your hamlet and unlock new features on the island. There is no limit to what can be gathered, so players may do this at their leisure. Occasionally, players may also find seeds that can be used to plant new crops in their personal farming patch.

Growing Crops:
Players can secure seeds to plant in a designated area in their hamlet by gathering out in the wilds, or by purchasing seeds from one of the friendly assistant Mammets. By growing these plants, players gain access to materials and crops to upgrade their hamlet, and feed their animals.

To grow a crop, players must plant their seeds, then return each day to water the crops as they grow into plants ready to harvest! If it rains while the player is on their island, they won’t have to water their plants as the soil will gain moisture from the rain. Crops will not grow if the moisture level of the soil gets too low, so players must tend them often!

Caring for Animals:
While wandering the lush island, players will encounter roaming animals. Players can capture and raise them in their hamlet to receive unique materials such as wool, eggs and shredded scales that can be used to upgrade their island. Players can use ingredients from plants to craft meals for their furry, feathered, and scaly friends. Using more ingredients to craft meals leads to a higher level meal and happier animals. If a creature is happier from being well fed then it may produce more materials for collection each day!

Building:
The hamlet begins as a small hut, but as players collect materials the assistant Mammets will suggest ways to improve the island. Players can build new structures such as Workshops to have Mammets craft items, or Granaries to send Mammets out into the wild to gather materials. All buildings can be upgraded by providing materials to the Mammets, unlocking better functionality and new appearances.
