PSN hackers might have obtained personal info

More bad news for PlayStation owners. Sony has posted an update on the PlayStation Blog about the recent attack on their PSN and Qriocity services and, apparently, user account information may have been compromised.

Patrick Seybold, Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media, writes:

We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained.

Seybold goes on to say that Sony cannot rule out the possibility that credit card information was stolen as well, although there is no evidence that that information was taken at this time.

If you are worried that your credit card information has been compromised, Seybold suggests that you change your password once PSN and Qriocity are back online. He also reminds gamers that Sony will never ask for personal information through email, telephone or postal mail.

Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well.

Currently, it's not known how long the PSN outage will continue. Sony says it will restore service "as soon as possible."
