The ad surfaced in Japan about a week after release, so these numbers likely represent day-one purchases, which is in-line with Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, which sold 3 million units on day-one.

However, considering the Nikkei reports that Hideo Kojima had spent over $80 million on development for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, it will likely have to sell over 6 million units to break even, according to Forbes
