New Prototype 2 Details From EGM

Some new Prototype 2 details have emerged from the next issue of EGM.

In an interview with the magazine, Radical Entertainment's design director, Matt Armstrong stated how exactly James Heller will be able to upgrade his skills and abilities. Armstrong said that the game will not feature the "move store" which was the hub you accessed when you wanted to purchase new moves and abilities in the original game.

In Prototype 2 you will instead learn your moves and abilities from fighting enemies and progressing through the game. One reason for the change in how you'll learn in the game was Armstrong's playthrough of the original title after it had shipped. He had just defeated the games' first boss and subsequently unlocked 21 new abilities.
“My heart just sank,” he told EGM. “I just couldn’t believe we actually shipped with that. I cannot image there was a single player, even the most obsessive-compulsive player in the world, who would sit there and read through the descriptions for 21 different abilities and then figure out which one actually had the most value to them, let alone be able to apply it coherently within the game.”
Another way you'll be able to pick up new moves is through the course of underground lairs. The lairs will be filled with infected and you'll have to defeat enemies until the end of the tunnel, picking up some sort of collectible along the way. Lairs will be marked around the city by the light that illuminates from the man hole covering. As Heller, you'll be able to access these lairs from the surface.

Another new inclusion in the game will be James Heller's sonar abilities, which were described as "pings". You'll be able to "ping" your surroundings to locate humans in which need to be saved. You will also use this ability to locate enemies as well. Armstrong stated that this ability was included to "slow down" the game a bit from its hectic pace.

Throughout the game you will gain mutations but you will only have three slots to put them in so you will always have to decide on which mutations will be the best fit for the stage you are in.
“You are always going to have more mutations than you have slots for, so you are going to have to make value judgments,” said Armstrong.
Prototype 2 is out in 2012 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
