Nintendo DS

Peggle: Dual Shot

What is better than playing one of the most addictive casual games ever on PC? Playing it, and its sequel Peggle Nights wherever you want on the DS. Aim the ball, fire, and watch as the ball bounces down the screen taking out as many orange pegs on the board as possible. It sounds easy enough but once you get started it will prove impossible to put down. With hundreds of levels and challenges, youw will keep coming back for more.

Scribblenauts

Scribblenauts is an innovative blend between platformer and puzzle game. To complete the hundred odd levels, the game’s character Maxwell will have to be supplied with the required tools. These tools appear by typing their names into the keyboard. You need wings to make Maxwell fly? A ladder or rope to reach a ledge? You have but to ask for it. The beauty of this game is that there is more than one way to complete each level. This unique gameplay earns Scribblenauts a place in our top 5 DS games for the year.

Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box

We find the good Professor and his assistant Luke on the trail of the Elysian box which has something to do with the death of the Professor’s friend. To find the box and solve the mystery, the two must beat more than a hundred puzzles, each with a varying degree of difficulty. Visuals and audio are superb, with the opening and cut-scenes reminiscent of after-school cartoons. Solving brain-teasers has never been so much fun.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story

What happens when Mario and Luigi are accidentally inhaled by Bowser? That’s what you will find out when you play Bowsers Inside Story. Mario and Luigi must help Princess Peach escape from Bowser’s insides whilst helping Bowser (on the outside) to protect his castle from the conniving Fawful. The visuals continue the Mario trend of bright locations and colorful characters. Mario games have always been absolute fun to play and Bowser’s Inside Story is no exception.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

Violence, drugs and sex - three things you wouldn’t normally see on Nintendo’s handheld but one can leave it to Rockstar to be the exception to the rule. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is targetted at the adult market and tells Huang’s story of revenge in Liberty City. The sandbox city is huge and the amount of things you can do really brings home the size of the game. Even after completing the main story, there are heaps of side missions and other tasks that will keep gamers entertained for hours. The visuals make the most of the DS' capabilities, as does the audio even despite the limitations of the console. The controls work extremely well, utilising the stylus where needed. The adult themes mean that the game isn’t suited for younger gamers, but for everyone else, GTA: Chinatown Wars is one of the must-have titles for 2009.
