Ultimate Nerd Rage: Video Game Argument Leads To Murder
An argument over whose turn it was to play Scarface: The World Is Yours caused a 22-year-old southeast Texas man to shoot and kill his cousin back in 2007. On Monday 4th April he pleaded guilty to the crime and was sentenced to serve 30 years in prison.
Alejandro Garcia, 22, and his cousin George Flores, 17, and at least two other teens were hanging out at their house in the 1000 block of 18th Street in Corpus Christi, drinking and smoking marijuana. An argument started when there was a disagreement to whose turn it was to play the game, Scarface: The World Is Yours. You know, the usual "it's my go", "no, you just had a go, it's my turn."
Ultimately, the argument between the two cousins led to Garcia shooting Flores in the head at close range. The teen was found dead in a bedroom at the home in 2007. Since then, the guilty Garcia had fled and closed off all contact with relatives and friends.
During June 2010, Garcia surrendered himself to the police and a court hearing was arranged. On Monday 4th April, Garcia pleaded guilty to murdering his cousin and was sentenced to serve 30 years in prison. Prosecutor Joe Mike Pena said that he will be eligible for parole after serving 15 years.
Hopefully, news corporations will not pick up on the news and start blaming the game the argument was over for the murder...I think they have learned their lesson. Scarface: The World Is Yours is by its own nature is a violent game that includes crime, drugs and gun violence.
I would add though, that during my youth I had many fights with my siblings over whose turn it was to play a game, however the consequences were a quick scrap or verbal conflict rather than a murder. Still, it's enraging stuff, and with the added drugs and the clearly warped mind of Garcia, it unfortunately led to a murder.
