How could I not pick this up as soon as it came out? One of my most anticipated sequels, regardless of whether or not there was really a need for it.

Sony and Media Molecule announced the release date for ModNation Racers today. We'll be getting to enjoy Sackboy-esque racing come May 25. But there are now going to be some popular Sony-exclusive characters coming along for the ride. Unfortunately for us, there doesn't seem to be a way to get our hands on all of them, as each retailer will be getting their own pre-order bonus character.
The first paid DLC for Mass Effect 2 was announced today, and it serves to confirm and enhance some details that had already been heavily rumored. The new DLC is titled "Kasumi's Stolen Memory" and while it does add Kasumi to the game, it also features a new, roughly 90-minute heist mission. The good news for those of us that have beaten the game? Since the game allows the player to continue on after finishing the main storyline, this quest will be available in that end-game free roam.
GDC got underway yesterday in San Francisco, and the developers started coming right out with the news. The earliest big announcement in the day was from Seven45 Studios, a game called Power Gig: Rise of the SixString. Seven45 Studios is a new developer and a sister company to First Act, the music instrument manufacturer. This partnership is what allows them to bring something new to the rhythm genre: a guitar controller that is also a functioning six string electric guitar.
The culture ministry in South Korea increased their budget for battling game addiction over ten times to five billion won ($4.4 million) today. This is the first of a few steps the ministry has in mind in order to curb game addiction.
Aforementioned budget increase
Some developers, depending on the type of game being made, would be required to implement a sort of deterrent based on fatigue. As playtime increases, aspects of the game may degrade, such as the player character's abilities.
Wha?! Platinum Games, the developer of Bayonetta, is currently working on a third-person shooter called Vanquish. It features a main character in some kind of futuristic full-body armor. And it's...a shooter. But, this shooter will not feature a multiplayer component. Normally, I'd be kind of excited about this, because it can mean that this game is guaranteed to bring a good story and single-player experience to the table, as opposed to recent shooters where the multiplayer is really more important than the single-player. And yet, I feel like that won't be the case with Vanquish.
Fresh off the general success of MAG, Zipper Interactive's diving right back into development with SOCOM 4. The game was announced earlier today, and Jeremy Dunham of Zipper shed some light on just what the game entails. Plot-wise, the game surrounds a coup d'etat by a "militant revolutionary" in an "important South American country." Beyond that, all we know is that the game's single-player puts the player in command of a five-man squad charged with taking him out.
Activision has finally responded to all the goings-on at Infinity Ward, as well as dropped some bombs on the gaming community. In the announcement, it was confirmed that Infinity Ward heads Jason West and Vince Zampella were fired, but no more detail is given. Infinity Ward will be temporarily led by Activision's publishing CTO, Steve Pearce, and head of production, Steve Ackrich. Despite the chaos, the studio will still be putting out the two planned downloadable map packs for Modern Warfare 2, which are set to release sometime before the end of the year.
In light of the Leap Year of Death problem, many gamers (myself included) had their eyes and ears focused on Sony and their actions over the course of yesterday, and not much else. But, while Sony was working on the problem, and we were ranting angrily about it, there were some other big happenings in the gaming world. A real shake-up at Infinity Ward seems to have taken place, and it could mean big things for the Call of Duty franchise, as well as bringing Activision to a new level of hatred for some.
You heard me right, folks. The Capital of Kansas is now to be known as Google. At least until the end of March. The mayor of Topeka, Bill Bunten, signed a proclamation today that deems Topeka as "Google, Kansas - The Capital City of Fiber Optics." I'm appalled by this information even as I type it. While I could see some little nowhere town pulling this kind of stunt, the fact that it's a state capital is just...bizarre.
While there hasn't been any official word from Sony, forums all over the net are showing many users have seen the end of their problems with error 8001050F. I can report that my PS3 is working just fine now, though the date reads 2/28 instead of 3/1. I signed successfully into the Playstation Network and booted up Heavy Rain with no problems. If you haven't seen a change yet, hold out! All will be well soon.

It seems the Playstation Network is looking at some serious issues today, and this writer got himself caught up in all of it. Apparently, a few hours ago, some gamers started to experience a problem when trying to load up some games, Heavy Rain among them. When booting the game, it would try to load trophy data, fail, and boot the players out of the game. When trying to check on their trophies, some even noticed missing trophies! Players are being given error code 8001050F. Even playing offline games will not work, it seems, as long as they're trophy-enabled.
Sony has confirmed that the source of this error is a bug in the clock functionality. Hit the jump for full details (Update 6) and a link to the blog post from Playstation.Blog.

Square Enix and Eidos announced today that Just Cause 2 will be getting a demo. It'll be hitting all the right digital marketplaces on March 4th. Specifically, this means the Xbox Live Marketplace, the Playstation Store, and Steam. The demo will have the player trying out what the 35 square-mile Lautan Lama Desert has to offer. That sounds like a pretty hefty locale, but it's really just a fraction of the 400 square miles of terrain that make up the map for the full game.

Already available on the EU Playstation Store, a demo for the English-subtitled version of Yakuza 3 should be hitting the US Playstation Store when the update is pushed through today.
The Yakuza franchise is a decidedly Japanese one. When the first two entries were released to the West, back on the PS2, they didn't go over very well with the public. While the series has always sold very well in Japan, and has a hardcore following (mostly of Otakus and those nostalgic for the old school third person brawlers) in the West, it just didn't really generate sales here. So, even though Yakuza 3 released in Japan almost a full year ago, the Western release still isn't coming for a few more weeks.

AT&T announced that they would be making a strong foray into the world of Android handsets, with five announced to be coming in the first half of this year at CES. Well, the first of them is set for release, they announced today.
The Motorola Backflip is a new phone with an interesting form factor featuring Android running underneath, and the Motoblur Social UI on the surface. Motorola has clawed their way back up to sit among the top phone makers, after losing market share these last few years, with their strong showing of Android-based handsets.
