The Moon Is Rolling in Her Grave...

The moon has been kidnapped, and is currently being held hostage.

That is not a joke. Within the world of Infinite Undiscovery, a sinister group known as the Order of the Chains has ensnared the moon, locking it in its place in the heavens with heavy... well, chains. Didn’t see that coming, did you?

The group is lead by their enigmatic leader, the Dreadknight – a name which may ring a bell for serious Square fans, since a similar character appeared in the second Final Fantasy game. His human name (as opposed to his title) is Leonid. Now, Final Fantasy fans may not have heard that variation of the name before, but it’s definitely something we’ve come across in the past.

I Am Not Your Waking Dream

Speaking of Final Fantasy, a series which is older than I am, and far more famous, Infinite Undiscovery appears to have taken inspiration from it. The chains holding the moon remind me, visually, of nothing so much as Alexander’s sword, held above Alexandria Castle in FFIX. The idea of the chains being the driving force behind the monsters and various miasma in the world reminds me of the Mist – again, in FFIX - or the monsters called by the Lunar Cry in FFVIII. Indeed, the entire focus on the moon is an ongoing theme in Final Fantasies – IV and VIII come to mind immediately. The music has the same brilliance that the series has always shown, and I wouldn’t be surprised to find that composer Nobuo Uematsu is behind it.

These aren’t bad points. It was a Squaresoft - now Squareenix - game that fed my original interest in gaming, and turned it into an all consuming obsession (Final Fantasy VIII, if anyone’s interested). However, surprisingly, Square’s new offering for the Xbox 360 part of the gaming world is not a part of the Final Fantasy series.

Even more surprisingly, the game was created by Tri-Ace, the company behind the Star Ocean series. Square is merely the publishing company - not the creators.

A Cleric, a Thief and a Mage walk into a bar. The Barman asks “What is this, a party?”

When it comes to characters, the plot seems to take a turn for The Man in the Iron Mask, with your reluctant hero, Capell, mistaken for legendary warrior, Sigmund the Liberator, and imprisoned. Following some heroic events, it seems he’s now a part of the revolution to liberate the moon, whether he wants to be or not.

At a glance
Infinite Undiscovery draws influences from the Final Fantasy series but shows promise of being able to stand on its own feet.
