Space Age Magic

Magic: The Gathering moves away from terra firma and heads off to the stars with the release of the Edge of Eternities set. Players will explore distant planets in the Sothera system, a system that sits on the edge of the universe. And rather than battle other planeswalkers, players will be waging war with alien factions, battling for control of a dangerous relic.

We at Hooked Gamers were lucky enough to attend one of the pre-release events to celebrate the soon-to-be released set at Theory Bar in Melbourne. Along with several other Magic players, we had the chance to test out some of the new features of the set as well as have a first hand view of some of the gorgeous artwork of the set.

Set Mechanics

Spacecraft and Station
In a way, the Spacecraft play out similarly to vehicles, although the creatures are not permanently attached to the Spacecraft. Tapping (or Stationing) a creature you control on the Spacecraft, adds counters equal to its power to the Spacecraft. Once the Spacecraft has the required counters, it becomes an artifact creature with the abilities and power and toughness indicated.

Warp
Warp is a hyperspace jump, giving permanents the ability to be cast from exile on a future turn. When paying the Warp cost for a card and casting it from your hand, it’ll be exiled from the battlefield at the beginning of the next endstep, awaiting its return on a future turn. This is great for allowing players to bring a creature out earlier, but has the disadvantage of only being useful for one turn until you can return it from exile at a later time.

Void
Void is an additional effect to a sorcery or instant if a certain trigger is met. Permanents can also have Void, and will often include adding counters to the permanent if another permanent left the battlefield or a creature was warped during a turn.

Lander
Lander, a new artifact token that captures the feeling of setting foot on a new planet for the first time. Lander tokens can be sacrificed for two generic mana to search for a basic land, then put it onto the battlefield tapped. This is great for adding mana quickly so that you can bring out the big guns earlier than you otherwise would.

The Cards

As always, the artists of the Edge of Eternity set have provided us with some gorgeous looking cards.

Card variations
Although there are some gorgeous cards in the Edge of Eternities set, I am particularly enamored with the Showcase cards, especially those that look like a 1950’s style movie poster. Headliner cards, Borderless cards and those with extended art all feature within the set.

Lands
Planets are a new Land type (which feature the Station keyword mechanic)

Even those lands that are not planets have a celestial feel to them
