Dormant names to be freed up in WoW pre-patch purge
What, you haven't logged in to World of Warcraft as PalinTheMaverick08 for a while? I bet it seemed like such a witty, topical name at the time.
Nevertheless, according to a post on the official game blog, any accounts inactive since November 13, 2008 will have their names unceremoniously removed, and placed back into the pool for someone else to use.
If you want to keep hold of an old account, you'll just need to log back in before the game gets updated.
You will need to log in to World of Warcraft and enter the game using each character whose name you wish to retain before patch 6.0.2 goes live.
While it is possible no one will claim your recently released name and you might be able to snag it again, it is probably not worth the risk if you want to keep your names intact long-term.

As yet, there's no concrete date for the aforementioned patch 6.0.2, which aims to prepare WoW for yet another expansion pack - Warlords of Draenor.
