'RuneScape' celebrates 12th birthday

Jagex's RuneScape turned 12 this month and the developer is celebrating with community competitions and other in-game events.

The game, which originally launched back on January 4, 2001, is now one of the longest running games online. The game recently celebrated another milestone with its 200th million account back in July 2012.
“2012 was filled to the brim with game updates both large and small,” said design director Mark Ogilvie. “Last year saw flurries of graphical reworks of the popular areas of the game, bigger and better boss monsters, an overhaul of the combat system, new starting areas as well as the challenging task of introducing voice acting into the game.

“For me, the highlight of the year was undoubtedly witnessing the creation of the 200th million RuneScape account, which secured the game’s place as the most played online game of all time. But 2013 is going to be even better.”
Jagex has plans to introduce a faster HTML5-powered game play experience with two new skills coming as well; Grandmaster level, Construction skillwork, and Wilderness Warbands.
