E3 2012: Crystal Dynamics Had To Go In New Direction With 'Tomb Raider'
Crystal Dynamics has stated that their upcoming Tomb Raider reboot is a needed one, as they had gone as far as the old IP could take them.
Speaking to VG247 at E3, the game's art director Brian Horton said that after Tomb Raider: Underworld it was time to go in a new direction with Lara Croft.
“We’d done all that we could do with that version of Tomb Raider and we needed to think about Lara in a fresh way,” he said to us.
“We wanted to keep the same tenants of an action-adventure game but put them through a new filter and so the origin story bubbled up from that.
“By having a period of incubation, we’ve been able to revitalise not only the tone and mood of the game, but also the mechanics and the way the game plays in order to make it more relevant for today’s gamer.”
Tomb Raider is out on March 5, 2013 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
