Steam Forums Possibly Hacked

Valve have temporarily taken their Steam forums offline after what they think was a possible security intrusion was detected.

This is what you'll see if you try to access the forums:
“The Steam Forums are temporarily offline for maintenance. Your patience is appreciated.”
While Valve won't give a reason for the temporary closure, forum members believe it was because the forums were breached late last night.

Eurogamer is reporting that they were contacted by a Steam forum member that a group calling themselves "FknOwned" were altering the content within the forums and also spamming users email addresses. The email messages users received stated the following:
“Ever wanted to dominate the servers you play on with guaranteed results, but you were too afraid to cheat because of ban risks? Visit [removed domain] It’s safe, secure and undetected.

“Along with hacks, we’ve also got some general discussion sections, hacking tutorials and tools, porn, free giveaways and much more. This site has been conditioned to meet all your needs in terms of resources so be sure to take a look and tell us what you think.

“Thanks again, the fkn0wned team.”
Hey, at least they're upfront about the content on their website.

The Steam forum is run off the VBulletin software which is separate software than what is used by Steam to run their site. However, it is still unclear as to whether or not any personal information or financial information from users was compromised.

If you happen to be a Steam forum member, it might be wise to change your password...like now.

We'll keep you updated with any new information.
