Valve announces SteamOS for the living room
Valve look to be heading towards becoming a player in the console market with the announcement of SteamOS, an operating system which they hope will bring PC gaming into the living room.
"As we’ve been working on bringing Steam to the living room, we’ve come to the conclusion that the environment best suited to delivering value to customers is an operating system built around Steam itself. SteamOS combines the rock-solid architecture of Linux with a gaming experience built for the big screen. It will be available soon as a free stand-alone operating system for living room machines."
It appears as though much of the current Steam platform will carry over to their 'living room OS', so Steam users should be quite familiar with the system. But Valve have pinpointed four new features focused on the living room:
- In home Streaming
- Music, TV and Movies
- Family sharing
- Family options
Valve will have a couple more announcements in the coming days, so we look forward to hearing what else is in store.
