Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare goes full sci-fi, includes CGI Kevin Spacey

Another year, another Call of Duty game. This time, Activision and Sledgehammer Games look to be going full-on futuristic. The just-released trailer showcases a ton of sci-fi gadgetry, such as hoverbikes and exoskeletons.

There's also a strong focus on a character played by Kevin Spacy. Spacy lends his voice and likeness to the role, resulting in a character that is highly reminiscent of Frank Underwood from the Netflix series House of Cards.

Personally, I think Spacey's facial animations seem like a bit dated, especially after games like LA Noir. But the other aspects of the graphics are as impressive as ever. It wouldn't be Call of Duty if its 'splosions weren't pretty, that's for sure.

Activision also released a chilling short documentary, titled Superpower for Hire. The documentary makes it clear that Advanced Warfare will focus on PMCs--private military companies.

Metal Gear Solid fans will be quick to point out that MGS4 mined this same territory back in 2008. MGS deserves credit for predicting the rise of PMCs before the public at large was aware of the concept, but given that it is an increasingly important political issue, no one game series should have a monopoly on the subject matter. It does beg the question, though: will this potentially-real-world subject matter be undermined by the futuristic concepts on display?

We'll find out when Advanced Warfare launches for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on November 4.
