Double Fine announces hacking-puzzler Hack 'n' Slash

Today Double Fine announced Hack 'n' Slash, a new puzzle action title with a hacking theme.

Hack 'n' Slash was reportedly originally a prototype idea during Amnesia Fortnight, Double Fine's "internal game jam." The team apparently liked it enough to develop a full, polished version for public release.

The story concerns a young elf using her computer hacking skills to cheat through a classic action/adventure game.

The game was joint-funded by Indie Fund, Humble Bundle, Hemisphere Games, make all, AppAbove Games, Adam Saltsman, The Behemoth, Morgan Webb, and Rob Reid. It's part of a two-game deal that also includes the recent Early Access release Spacebase DF-9.

"I’ve always loved games with lots of secrets in them," says project lead Brandon Dillon, "and when I first discovered a hex editor in an emulator, it dawned on me that I could be a kind of digital treasure hunter—no game could keep even its deepest secrets from me if I adventured long enough in its code and memory."

Double Fine president and CEO Tim Schafer adds: "Look, I’m going to be honest with you here: I don’t really understand what’s going on inside this game’s code. I believe it contains ‘algorithms.’ But I know what’s going on inside my heart when I play it. And that is joy."

Hack ‘n’ Slash will be released for Windows, Mac, and Linux on Steam and DRM-free in the first half of 2014.
