Lego: The Hobbit smauging up PCs in 2014

Warner Bros. has announced that Lego: The Hobbit will be released in Spring 2014 for PC, Mac, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Playstation 4, Playstation 3, Playstation Vita, Wii U, and 3DS.

Rather than being based on J.R.R. Tolkien's book, the new game is said to be based on the first two films of Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy, An Unexpected Journey and the upcoming Desolation of Smaug (which will open worldwide on December 13). It appears that the events of the third film will not appear in the game. (This makes Lego: The Hobbit a video game based on a playset based on a movie trilogy based on a book.)

Players will be able to jump into the furry feet of Bilbo Baggins, as well as Gandalf and all of the dwarves traveling with them: Thorin, Fíli, Kíli, Óin, Glóin, Dwalin, Balin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Dori, Nori, and Ori. It also appears that each dwarf will have his own unique ability. Bombur, for example, will be able to use his belly as a trampoline.

As they journey through such locations as Hobbiton, the Misty Mountains, Goblin-town, Mirkwood, and Rivendell, players will also mine for gems, craft magical items, and build "immense new LEGO structures," according to the game's press release.

Lego: The Hobbit will be developed by TT Games, who previously developed such titles as Lego: Marvel Super Heroes, Lego: Harry Potter, Lego: Star Wars and of course Lego: The Lord of the Rings.
