Fan-made Black Mesa mod to become commercial product
The fan-made, Source-powered Half-Life remake Black Mesa will soon be coming to Steam as a commercial product.
This was revealed by Black Mesa's developers in a recent blog post. Valve, developers of the Half-Life seires, has given the Black Mesa development team their permission to sell the mod on Steam.
"This is an incredible honor," said the developers. "One we never expected - but also one we found hard to accept."
Black Mesa was originally intended to be released in two parts, though the second part (which includes the game's final chapter) has yet to be completed.
Said the developers: "We believe we can make the game even better by having full access to the Source engine. This lets us tackle and fix limitations instead of working around them."
The post promises that the new and improved Black Mesa will be released "soon" for a "relatively low price."
However, the team will continue to support the free version, releasing a new free version shortly after the Steam release. "We also plan to open source our maps and some game assets to the modding community!" the team adds.
You can download the original Black Mesa mod through its official website.
