    Spore Overview

If you are new to the game Spore, then you should take the time to read this brief description of the game. Will Wright's brainchild, Spore, allows players to create virtually everything in an environment they created. Players will build up a creature from the ground and succeed it through the game's six phases. At first players are limited with the cellular stage in the Tide Pool phase. After an extended amount of gameplay the Creature phase appears. In this phase you really start to shape what your creature really is, and how it eats, fights, runs and well … lives. The Tribal phase is where your creature starts to get civilized, then the City and Civilization phases advance. The Space phase, the final step, has everything unlocked for your personal wants. This phase also unlocks the UFO editor, so now what? How about taking over the Universe?

    Phases of Spore

    Tide Pool Phase

    Editor Unlocked: Microbal Editor
Fight with other creatures and consume them to adjust the form and abilities of your creature. It's survival of the fittest at the most microscopic level. It also seems like this stage is the most changed. From screenshot to screenshot we have of the microscopic level, the graphics and style of gameplay seem to often dramatically change.

The Tide Pool phase of the game is where your creature initially develops it's way of life. What your creature is like and how swift, eager and strong it is is fine tuned in the creature stage, but it really is played out in the Tide Pool phase. Other cell-like creatures inhabit the microscopic world. Some are just basic cellular blobs, which your creature can easily eat. But others have certain defences that prevent you from eating them and can cause damage to your creature. (However, you can modify your creature later to overcome these defences.) Others, you should avoid altogether because to them – you’re food! You are not the only one in the Tide Pool, and you must develop your amoeba to meet the standards of living. Sound like Will Wright yet?

    Creature Phase

    Editor Unlocked: Creature Editor
Venture onto land and help your creature learn and evolve with forays away from your nest. The only way to grow is by taking chances! Many lurking creatures will roam the planet in this stage of the game. You might have some giant apes, and some tiny muskrats. Remember, most of what you see, is what you create. Attacking is also done procedurally based on where your main weapon or mouthpiece is. It is now believed that you can select what part of the creature you want it to attack with. However, some creatures are larger than yours and are potentially hazardous.

In the creature stage your creature begins to communicate and interact with other members of the species. Some might travel in packs to hunt prey or some might be lovable, yet poisonous bear type creatures. The options in the game are unlimited. A creature can be designed and edited down to your very liking. Althoug the game comes with thousands, if not millions of possibilites, do expect the Spore community to add some legs, eyes, or whatever they feel necessary.

    Tribal Phase

    Editor Unlocked: Hut Editor
Instead of controlling an individual creature, you are now caring for an entire tribe. Give them tools and guide their interactions as you upgrade their state of existence. This stage is the fine line between civilized creature and wild creature. With weapons at hand and tents around your tribal fire, your creature begins to become superior in the Spore world. You now control a herd of your creatures and also a tribal hut for them to live in. Your goal is to gather members for your tribe and become the dominant tribe. These members, which are all your final creature, can be found from the wild or from other tribes. You have to achieve a population of 15 members and acquire the necessary amount of technology to advance to the civilization stage. You can acquire technology through the use of meat. Meat becomes the main resource and economic source for your people to expand, create new things, and to survive. In trying to achieve your necessary amount of people to move on, you have one two choices. One, you can make diplomatic alliances with other tribes so that they may join your tribe and you can gain their technology, or two, you can directly attack their tribal hall in order for them to have no where else to go but to you. As one reporter has described her experience, she went to another tribe for a diplomatic relation with bribes of meat and music. While half of the tribe accepted her, the other half did not. Lucky for her she had also brought her clubs. In a small pop down screen when she highlighted the other tribes main hut, there was an option for ransack, which she voluntarily clicked. With losses to both sides, the hut was destroyed and the local tribesman came with her back to her infirmary for a good rest.

With various other tribes living in your world that are of your final creature, you compete against these tribes for things, such as food and space. You can trade, defend, attack, or steal members from these other tribes, so that eventually you become the dominate tribe. Then once you are the dominate tribe on the planet, you move to the city stage, to really develop your dominant creature's civilization. But yet again, you're not the only city on the planet, so you must continue to develop weapons, strategy and now some vehicles.

    City Phase

    Editor Unlocked: Building Editor
Bring your creatures' race into a new golden era by building up the technology, architecture, and infrastructure of their city. At this stage you have a small metropolis consisting of a few buildings (including your hut). You can build roads and buildings and the aim is to keep your creatures happy by providing for their needs. Not much information was released on the city stage. But this is the next step to a huge advancement of your creature. Numerous fans of Simcity and Spore have agreed that the city phase of Spore is like a simple version of Simcity.

Now not much is really known about the difference between the civ stage and the city stage but it may just be the establishment of your city, nothing as major as any of the other stages. It may even be that the city stage has been dropped and is just a part of the civ stage because it would be unneccesary to have it. But just as the cell stage is a learning stage for the creature the city stage might be a learning tool for the civ.

    Civilization Stage

    Editor Unlocked: Vehicle
Once your city is established, your creatures begin seeking out and interacting with other cultures. Make contact with an olive branch or a war cry. The goal for your creatures is to conquer the planet. In order for you to advance to the space stage, you must capture all the cities on your planet. In the civilization phase, your city's statues as a whole is shpaced by what your tribal attitude was like towards others. If you were militaristic in your conquest of the other tribes, then your civilization will be geared towards a militaristic society that specializes but is not limited to a strong social status that is aggressive and forceful. If you are a militaristic society for example then your vehicles will specialize in war vehicles. In your quest to capture all the cities on the planet however, you will come across their specialized technologies too. when you conquer them, whether through diplomacy or force, you will adapt their technology expanding your units and technologies as well. When you do finally achieve the space stage you will have acquired a full range of technology that can be used to meet not only other creatures, but other civilizations throughout the galaxy.

The main resource for your economy now becomes spice, a resource that you can farm or mine out of the ground using 'harvesters' near your city or in colonies that you establish. Your units become available as you increase your population, this can either be done and will have to be done at first by diplomacy because when you enter the civ stage after the tribal stage, you only have 15 members in your tribe. To start making land based units you have to have a total population of 40 members. To start making sea units you have to have a total poulation of around 60 members and to make air units you have to have 80 members.

    Space Phase

Editor Unlocked: UFO Editor (All Editors are available in the Space Phase)
The time has come to move on to other worlds in your solar system. Make contact, colonize, or terraform, then venture further to find other solar systems. A mission structure provides new goals in your quest for galactic dominance. With the UFO you can do many things, which are sometimes given to you as missions. You can choose to explore many different planets. Terreforming as you go and adding cities, which contribute to your overall money. Sometimes, even on barren planets you can find alien artifacts (new technologies), which can be upgrades for your UFO (such as a better terreforming tool or a stronger weapon). Sometimes you get exploratory missions or treasure hunts, which may (we are unsure) ask you to explore a certain planet or find a certain item.

You may choose to visit other planets and befriend alien races, building up alliances with other creatures. There are advantages of having alliances with creatures. You can trade with them (Such as creatures and possibly technology). Also, you can join forces to fight against other alien races.
