Dante's Inferno - the literary masterpiece
This is the gist of the story: a game company markets a violent hack'n'slash game by giving it a catchy title "Dante's Inferno". As we all know, the game has absolutely nothing to do with Dante Alighieri's epic poem. The name is just a marketing ploy and pretty bad one at that, considering that most of the target group of this game probably have no notion of what Dante's Inferno really is and no one's going to buy the game on the basis of the title alone.
However, it seems that game companies aren't the only ones who can play this game. Now, a book publisher - Random House US - saw this as the perfect opportunity to market the ORIGINAL epic poem (translated, though) in a way that is eerily misleading. Click on the pop-up image and read the text carefully and you will see what I'm talking about.
That's right! They are using the game box cover art on the book, leading innocent little gamers to think that now their action epic has been turned into a book - and an epic poem at that! What a way to lead uneducated gaming masses to classic literature! I'm sure they will all be pleasantly surprised when they start the book, expecting to read a novelization of their hack'n'slash game.
Mind you, this is not the first time this has been done, but the previous attempts have usually been tied in with movies. Head over to
