Five Games That Should Have MMO Versions
There are plenty of MMOs out there each trying to appeal to a certain gamer. Most are fantasy-based as that's typically the easiest to transfer to a MMORPG type of game. There are others out there like Champions Online for the superhero fan and Age of Conan for the more violent seeking gamers. Many are based on film properties like Star Wars or The Matrix. There are even some for kids like Toon Town Online and Fusion Fall.
So in honor of these games and in the hopes of branching out ideas, here's a list of games that should have an MMO version of itself. Some are more likely than others while certain games would be easier to make the transfer. In no particular order, let's start this off with the most wanted and obvious of my selections:
Pokemon World
I covered this extensively in the past with a massive set of posts detailing everything that I could think of for a Pokemon MMO. Fans have been asking for it desperately, but it's unlikely that Nintendo will ever change their stance. It's a shame too since the two ideas fit so well together. Fallout Online
This one had a very good chance of actually happening but with a new legal battle erupting between Bethesda and Interplay, who knows if we'll actually see an MMO Fallout? It is an amazing concept to be sure. My interpretation of Fallout Online would actually see players creating Wastelanders to play as rather than Vault Dwellers. It'd be too odd to have so many Vault Dwellers running around the world. And the game world would be massive. Instead of just a single city and the surrounding area, either the west coast or east coast (developer's choice) would be open to players. My idea for the game's story would be that players are looking for the Promised Land, an area unaffected by the toxic fallout. Quests, karma, and gameplay would stay pretty much the same as Fallout 3 with the level cap being raised to 60. Admit it, we'd all like to explore the world of Fallout just a bit more.
Kingdom Hearts: The Keyblade Wars
One wouldn't think that Kingdom Hearts would lend itself well to an MMO. I think it would make an intriguing one. It would definitely be more action based than most MMOs. The game would take place deep in the series past where thousands possessed keyblades. Depending on whether you decide to be good or evil, your objective would be to either discover the source of the new influx of Heartless and Nobodies and stop them or take control of it. Players would be able to customize what their keyblade would look like and be able to travel to dozens of Disney worlds, including each of the Disney animated features, the Pixar movies, and some of the live-action classics like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The worlds would also be much larger than those in the Kingdom Hearts series. Would it work? Possibly, but it would be extremely difficult.
Fire Emblem Online
Fire Emblem fits very easily into the mold of other fantasy MMOs. For this particular one, I'd choose the Fire Emblem world of Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn, mainly because of the different races. Players could choose to be one of the laguz or the humans and fight in a war of global dominance for their country. The laguz would have more power than humans but humans would be able to choose different jobs like Myrmidon, Soldier, Fighter, Archer, Knight, Mage, Priest, Thief, or Berserker. Like the game, players would be able to power-up their job once they reach a certain point. Unlike other games, Fire Emblem players would have a small, three-man squad under their command. This would lend a bit more strategy into the game. A Fire Emblem MMO could work. The difficulty would come in differing it from the rest of the pack.
No More Heroes
This one will never happen, but it could be awesome. Players would enter the world of No More Heroes and be greeted with an extensive create-an-assassin tool. There you would choose your sex, weapon, how the weapon is used, personality, and motivation. Weapons would range from classic swords and guns to Travis's beam katana to ridiculous hidden weapons. There would also be distinct styles to use each weapon much like how Travis combines his beam katana with wrestling moves. Seduction, hypnosis, trickery, and dozens more would give your assassin his or her own style. The personality would give your assassin their strengths and weaknesses similar to how Travis was full of determination but had a weakness for women. Finally, motivation would give your character catchphrases and a bit more personality to round him out. The basic goal of the game would be to become the number one assassin in the UAA. This is done by taking on assassination missions which builds your capability meter. When it is filled, you take on the next highest ranked assassin whether it be a computer or an actual player. It'd be a constant fight for number one though if you lose you'll be dropped several ranks due to it taking a while for Dr. Fixemup to put your body back together. Ridiculous concept? Of course. Fun as hell? I'd like to think so.
