BioShock 2 DLC was already on the disc

BioShock 2 DLC was already on the disc
BioShock 2's Sinclair Solutions DLC pack was released this week. Thanks to some eagle-eyed members of the BioShock community, though, we've learned that the content has been on the retail game disc all along.

Posters on 2K's official forum noticed that the download was 24K on the PC and 108K on the Xbox 360, which implies that the content was already on the game disc and that the money you're shelling out is really just for an unlock code.

A 2K community manager going by the username "Elizabeth" stepped in with the following explanation:

The way our engine and game structure works is that people need to have the exact same content for people to play together. One of the challenges with post launch content for MP is that it can split the player base, and we want to avoid that whenever possible. For this content, creating the DLC package the way we did allowed for us to not split the player base – so whether you purchase the new content or not, you can still play with your friends.

Charging for content that's already on the disc has been done before, most notably with Resident Evil 5's Versus Mode. Many gamers, however, seem to be crying foul at the thought of paying for content that, technically, they already own on a disc they've already paid $60 for. If the content is complete and on the disc when it hits store shelves, they say, why should we have to pay extra to unlock it?

Don't look to 2K for an answer, as Elizabeth simply states, "I know some of you have strong beliefs about DLC, and I'm not here to sway your opinion or convince you to buy our stuff - if you like what we're offering, I hope you get it and enjoy it. If it's not your speed, enjoy BioShock 2 as we released it."

With the DLC era of game development in full swing, I have a feeling this is an issue we'll be hearing a lot more about in the near future.
