'Mortal Kombat Rebirth' Film Offers Interesting Possibilities
UPDATE: It seems that this film was designed to sell the concept of a new Mortal Kombat film to Warner Bros. Jeri Ryan, the actress who plays Sonya Blade in the film, posted on her Twitter account that the film's director, Kevin Tancharoen, created the test video in order to sell his concept of a re-envisioning of the franchise on the silver screen. Latino Review also posted a listing of the cast members in the video and also reveals that, while this probably hasn't been accepted by Warner Bros. yet, this may well be the direction the oft-rumored Mortal Kombat reboot will be going in.
Posted yesterday to Youtube, a film entitled Mortal Kombat Rebirth is already causing stirs amongst fans of the missing-in-action Mortal Kombat franchise. This new video depicts a vastly different version of the classic fighter franchise in which a non-cyberpowered Jax, now called Jacks Briggs, is a police captain in Deacon City in 2010 who interviews a subject whose identity is only revealed in the last seconds of the film. During the interview, Jacks briefs the individual regarding several at-large serial killers including a reimagined Baraka and Reptile who will be participating in a tournament being set up by a young Shang Tsung.
The possibilities of what is depicted boggles the mind. What are we looking at exactly? A companion film to a new Mortal Kombat game? A (very well done) fan film? Given that Ed Boon revealed that Warner Bros. is making a new title in the series back in January 2009 and that E3 is just next week the coincidence is too strong to ignore. However, with such a strong departure from the design Boon and Midway established it is almost assured that at least some fans will cry foul at this (potential) reinterpretation.
