Report: Microsoft TV Not Happening...Yet

According to some recent reports, negotiations between Microsoft and various television content providers have hit a snag. Meaning that Microsoft TV, part of their Xbox LIVE feature, has been put on the brakes.

A Reuters report states that Microsoft had been in advanced negotiations with several different media outlets for over a year. The discussions were so far advanced that Microsoft had nailed down dates to roll out the service over the next several months. At the last minute Microsoft pulled out of the deal stating that licensing costs for the services were too high. Their reasoning for pulling out due to the price was that they would not be able to compete with cable and satellite services.

Microsoft TV was a novel idea, allowing users to use the console as a medium to watch some of their favorite programming. Microsoft TV would have also allowed you to pick your own television packages after paying a set monthly price.
“They built Microsoft TV, they demoed it for us, they asked for rate cards but then said that was too expensive,” a senior media executive said.
The executive stated that the media outlets are hoping that Microsoft will return to the negotiating table with another offer in the near future.

Microsoft announced at CES 2012 that Fox Broadcast, Fox News, IGN, and the Wall Street Journal would all be releasing apps for the Xbox 360 in the US.
