The Best Thing Since Super Meat Boy!
Now I am not one for shameless promotion just for the sake of it, but this DESERVES it! Last year, the indie gaming scene managed to broaden its appeal with significant titles like Super Meat Boy for instance. Well if, you are a fan of that particular cube of raw pork, then let me shed some light on a game that will arouse you in the same way!
As soon as I saw that little 8-bit face brandishing an expression of horror, and those classic looking bloodied spikes, I was drawn to this game. It's title just convinced me that I had to buy it immediately:
ABAN HAWKINS AND THE 1000 SPIKES
Don't worry if you have never heard of it, it has only very recently come out. But trust me...you want this game.
If you consider yourself a hardcore gamer, and thought Super Meat Boy was the best thing since sliced bread, this is the game for you. It's a "retro style, hardcore, platform adventure" in which you navigate your way through a number of tombs in search of treasure. That's your story out of the way, now on to the gameplay.
You can jump, jump higher, and shoot and move. Simple. You can also push blocks and switches but that just involves moving.
Now, the best thing about this game is that it is hard, and it is very addictive. From the get-go I was moaning with every death and then smiling gleefully as I respawned to try again. There are spikes everywhere, and mostly hidden, so you will die many times. To beat each level you are going to need to memorize the path, perfect your timing, and grit your teeth. But the sense of satisfaction when you have mastered that level - UNPARALLELED!
And do you remember those cheats that used to give you a thousand lives? Well, you don't need it for this game, as you have a thousand lives to complete the game with. Something tells me that won't be enough though...
After much consideration, I don't think you need to know more; just go and download the game right now. Or at least get the trial and have a go. You know you want to. You can find it on the Xbox Live Indie Games section under the New category for 80MSP ($1). And trust me, this is worth a whole lot more for those who love their platformers.
Well, I'm going to get back to it. You may not hear from me for a while!
