Design and features
Asus VW222U LCD monitor is a 22 (WSXGA+ 1680x1050) widescreen monitor with a 16:10 aspect ratio, two 1W speakers. The LCD panel is the same as on, for example, Samsung 226BW, which is both of ours regular monitors, but Asus' monitor is more affordable and offers the bonus of small speakers as well. The monitor is pretty well built, but the stand lets it wobble a bit if the incentive is provided by a rough gamer.
The control panel is located on the bottom right and consists of an array of regular buttons. In addition, the S button provides a quick access to different viewing modes. The modes are the Standard mode, Theater mode, Game mode, Night View mode and Scenery mode. Some of the modes have pretty horrid presets (standard is washed out, while the game mode destroys the colour balance quite a bit) but, naturally, you are supposed to adjust them to your liking. The menus are as cumbersome to navigate as in any monitor, so we cannot fault Asus for it.

Performance
We tested the monitor with several games, including Crysis, which provides the graphics and sounds to test the full performance of any monitor. Overall, the display produces a great image quality consistently on every section of the screen. The backlighting is even and theres very little leakage at the edges of the screen not something that you'd notice. The wide viewing angles (horizontal 170 / vertical 160 degrees) allow you to play games and watch movies with your friends if you want to. The fast response time of the display never lets you down or shows any ghosting even when the action is hectic.
The speakers, however, are not something that you'd want to rely on to provide the proper gaming atmosphere. You cannot really expect more from 1W speakers, though. For a gamer or a movie watcher, external speakers or good headphones are a must.
Conclusion
Over our crueling tests with games, movies and everyday tasks the monitor never left us wanting except for a few minor details, such as the speakers and the somewhat poor presets on the viewing modes. Naturally, a movie enthusiastic would also prefer a full HD resolution, but you cannot really expect that in this price group. At a little over 200, Asus VW222U manages to provide a great price-quality ratio compared to some other similar monitors. If you are looking into buying a 22 widescreen monitor, we'd definitely recommend that you consider this one as an option.
