Immortal priestess

Demon Chaos is a war-based action game by Genki, quite similar in style to the Dynasty Warriors series. The game, set in Feudal Japan, is exclusive to the PS2 and certainly makes full use of the system's capabilities.

The Story mode begins with a short video in which Yasaka Aoi, a young priestess, is attacked by a group of demon monsters at a temple. The Japanese God of War, Takeminakata No Mikoto, sends Inugami, a powerful dog spirit and the playable character, to aid Aoi. Aoi is granted immortality to support her quest to rid Japan of demons. Inugami and Aoi certainly have a lot of work on their hands, this quest will take years to complete and, as the feudal lords noticeably age, Aoi's immortality ensures that her appearance does not change at all.

Cleansing

The game is mission-based as Aoi and Inugami travel across Japan to find and destroy demons. The demons appear wherever there is human conflict and are present at the many battles occurring across Japan. Aoi and Inugami are not interested in the conflict of humans and will fight with any army to cleanse demons from an area.

The human armies are led by prominent figures from Japan's Sengoku period such as Oda Nobunaga and Uesugi Kenshin, giving a nice historic touch to the game. These armies are huge. There are literally millions of demons to kill and the engine can display over 65,000 enemies on-screen at once. An amazing achievement by developer Genki.

One slash...

While the missions in the game's Story Mode won't feature this many demons, there are times when you will be up against thousands of demons. Of course, while this may sound like a huge number of enemies (which it is), Inugami is powerful enough to potentially kill dozens of demons with a single slash of a sword. In fact, it is possible to kill hundreds, even thousands, of enemies in a stringed combo.

With so many demons to be destroyed, it is unsurprising that this game's battle system is your classic button masher. A basic attack is accomplished by tapping Square but nly four of these can be executed sequentially. To link up more than four attacks, Triangle is used, which propels Inugami forward and allows him to continue attacking. Pressing Circle will execute a special move that has a different effect depending on the weapon that you have equipped. This is usually some sort of explosion that is effective in wiping out a large number of enemies but using these attacks will deplete Inugami's 'Sprit gauge'. The R1 button will also cause the gauge to deplete and will allow Inugami to break through crowds of demons, performing powerful attack after attack.

At a glance
Demon Chaos is a good title for the PlayStation 2. While the battle system may be somewhat shallow, the game as whole proves to quite enjoyable.
