PS3 A new handheld arsenal (cntd)
There are three new weapons in Path of the Furon, each of them unique and powerful. The first one is the Superballer, which is similar to the dislocator, just more predictable in its path, but it makes up for this by flinging all objects that are near to the location of each bounce into all directions. Next one up is the Venus Human Trap, which creates a massive man-eating plant that reaches out with numerous spiked tentacles, consuming all enemies, pedestrians, and vehicles, and spitting out brainstems and ammunition. With every morsel that it eats, it also grows larger and larger with more and more tentacles to eat with. An added bonus is that enemies will think that the plant is a bigger threat than you are, and they will attack it instead of you. The final new ground weapon is the black hole gun that creates a miniature black hole that sucks up anything that isn’t nailed down, and then disappears with a massive explosion that showers the area with brainstems ripe for the harvesting.
Hi-Fi Destruction
Evidently Crypto crashed his old saucer while drunk one night, so Pox decided to build him a new one, which is fortunate for us. This new saucer is completely outfitted with new weapons, new capabilities, and an all new look. While maintaining the classic UFO look, each change of weaponry results in the saucer changing its look completely. The two old favorites of the Death Ray and the Quantum Deconstructor are back, more powerful than ever. Three new weapons are joining in on the fun; the Tornado-tron, the Plasma Cannons, and the Seeker Drones.
The Tornado-tron is a fun weapon to mess around with, because as its name suggests, it creates tornado that can rip through the cities leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The Plasma Cannons are probably the most traditional weapon in the UFO’s arsenal, as they are just a rapidly repeating air-to-air, or air-to-ground, albeit a very powerful one. The Seeker Drones are very similar to the Anal Probe in that they are capable of multiple lock-ons on multiple targets, or on a single target. These drones are able to punch straight through a building in order to reach their target and eliminate them.
These last two are excellent weapons for the new dog fighting while in the saucer, something you could not do in the previous games. Finally, the Abduction Ray is now the equivalent of an incredibly powerful vacuum cleaner. It can suck up hordes of civilians that are running around on the ground, very quickly, for mass DNA processing.
A new focus is also being placed on what is being referred to as “high-fidelity destruction”. You were always able to level buildings in previous Destroy All Humans! games, but now you can do it in a much more realistic and persistent environment. When firing upon buildings and the landscape itself you will scar those, leaving reminders that will last until you leave the city or start a new mission. Razed buildings will also remain destroyed, which enables the most determined players to level an entire city.
The way that the buildings crumble was very important to the developers so they made sure that buildings would fall apart differently depending on where the bulk of the damage was done. Buildings collapsing because of constant Death Ray bombardment into its side will look different than a building collapsing because the corner of it got caught in a Quantum Deconstructor blast.
Wrap-up
Overall, Destroy All Humans! Path of the Furon looks like it will stay true to the formula of insane, over-the-top destruction of both humans and property, while maintaining its charm. The story may not be the most compelling plot told this year, but you are playing
