In terms of gameplay, Sonic Unleashed features both day and night stages. During the daytime, Sonic runs more or less on rails, reaching speeds of up to 300mph and during the nighttime, Sonic transforms into a werehog due to Dr. Eggman using the Chaos Emeralds to transform Sonic into a lycanthrope, or in other words, a werehog. During the nighttime, the gameplay revolves more around bashing enemies rather than rushing through levels.
In addition to this new concept, Sonic Unleashed also allows Sonic to perform all new moves. In addition to the Homing Attack, Sonic can also perform the Quick Step and Sonic Boosts. The former is used to avoid obstacles without slowing down and the latter is used to hyperaccelerate and blow up surrounding objects. Sonic Unleashed also boasts a new system referred to as the "action-chaining" system, where you can earn accelerating energy if you’re capable of stringing together a set of actions. Repeated action chains will allow you to acquire special moves and select shortcuts.
World Tour
In Sonic Unleashed, players navigate a planet divided into different areas in which you’ll have to travel back and forth to over a period of time. Each area has cities and villages where Sonic must collect new information in order to progress to the next area. From the screenshots released thus far, it looks as though Sonic will have to navigate a European-themed area that has a Greek stage as well as another unknown European stage. In addition to this, there seems to be a desert stage that Sonic will have to travel through.
Compared to other Wii games at the time, Sonic and the Secret Rings was one of the best looking Wii games at the time, and even to this day it remains impressive. Following in those footsteps, Sonic Unleashed boasts very impressive graphics and just by looking at some screenshots, you can see that the game is very detailed compared to past Sonic games.
Ready for Launch
Though previous console Sonic games released in the last few years haven’t been that great, Sonic Unleashed looks as though it can break that trend. Boasting incredible visuals and bringing new ideas to the table, Sonic Unleashed is shaping up to be a great addition to the series. The only question that remains is whether the game can be as great as the early Sonic games. Heck, the console Sonic games released in the past few years can’t even hold a candle to the older ones. We won’t have to wait much longer to figure that out though; Sonic Unleashed hits the shelves on November 18th in the US.
