From 2D to 3D

Since his debut on the SEGA Genesis in 1991, Sonic the Hedgehog has been known primarily for his lightning-fast speed and ‘cool’ personality in platforming games. Back then, Sonic games were the ‘big’ titles on SEGA’s systems, rivaling with the Super Mario Bros. franchise. Though the quality of the Sonic the Hedgehog games weren’t quite as high as that of the Super Mario Bros. games, they proved to be a very worthwhile and enjoyable experience.

Then things started to go downhill for Sonic when he made the jump to 3D. The quality of his titles continuously decreased, and with it went some of his popularity. To do this day, most of Sonic’s console games have been hideous. However the same can’t be said for his handheld adventures. Wait a minute, let me rephrase that. Though most of Sonic’s console games haven’t been that great, the same can’t be said for his adventures of Nintendo’s handhelds. With the recent release of Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventure on the Nintendo DS, the blue hedgehog has slowly managed to star in more great games as opposed to his not so great games, most notably his recent Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), which honestly, was a disgrace to both SEGA and the Sonic franchise. Hoping to regain his once former glory, Sonic is set to star in Sonic Unleashed, the "Blue Blur’s" latest platforming game.

Rushing Out of the Gates

Unlike Sonic’s last console adventure, Sonic Unleashed will be released on PS3, X360, Wii, and PS2. The PS3 and X360 versions will be developed by the Sonic Team and it will be directed a new face, Yoshihisa Hashimoto. The Wii and PS2 versions will developed by Dimps, however both versions are going to be very similar. Though the Wii and PS2 versions are being developed by a different team, the two teams are always kept in step and cooperate with each other, sharing both the same development direction and resources. Beyond that, the Wii version will include a whole new experience that will take advantage of the Wii’s unique interface. Basically, the stages are going to be original to the Wii version even though it shares the same motifs with the other versions.

Loop-de-Loop

After the horrible attempt of bringing Sonic to Wii with Sonic and the Secret Rings, one should be worried about how this game will be executed. In Sonic and the Secret Rings, Sonic would move left or right depending on which way you titled the Wii Remote. The end result was a horrible platformer that felt like it should’ve had more development time. With Sonic Unleashed, the whole tilting concept from Sonic and the Secret Rings has been scrapped and replaced by a more-I’m going out on a limb here-enjoyable experience. Sonic Unleashed will utilize both the Wii Remote and nunchuk to perform actions that will require you to use the Wii Remote’s motion-sensing functions. Controlling Sonic will all be done by using buttons mapped on the Wii Remote and nunchuk.
