It’s Metal Gear! What else you need?

Who isn’t excited about Metal Gear Solid 4? The mysteries that surrounded the long lasting series will finally be revealed and the game will be packed with katana wielding ninjas and mentally unstable robot chicks! The Solid saga promises to go out with a bang and at Hooked we couldn’t be more excited about it. But before you think that this article is about Metal Gear Solid 4, I better get back on topic. Today we look at Metal Gear Online.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence was a bit of an experiment for Kojima’s team. The enhanced version of Snake Eater included a new perspective and a full online mode with maps and modes aplenty. While the former received more praise than the latter, Kojima’s crew got a lot of experience out of their experiment. They finally decided to shut the servers down to make room for the PS3 and PSP online installments. Confident in their learning, Kojima Productions is taking a big chance by releasing Metal Gear Online as a stand-alone game rather than an optional mode to the new Metal Gear. The release will be initially composed by an Online Starter Pack that comes with every copy of Metal Gear Solid 4. It consists of only five maps and extra content such as characters, weapons, game types and maps will only be available through PSN download.

PMC catapult!

Metal Gear Online will share many features with its single player counterpart but will also offer many of its own. The control scheme is almost identical to Metal Gear Solid 4, sneaking while crouched is now a reality and players can perform all Metal Gear Solid 4 CQC techniques. The war-torn Middle East will be the setting of choice. And besides the incredibly tempting man (PMC) catapults from the screenshots, we are particularly excited about the original additions such as the Sons of the Patriots system but more on that later.

Game modes in Metal Gear Online won’t differ too much from the ones seen in the PSP and PS2 games. There are a few game types to choose from besides the must-haves such as Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch that support up to 16 players. A noteworthy mention is the improved comeback of Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence’s ‘Sneaking’ mode that acted like the Capture the Flag seen in most online First Person Shooters. This edition offers a bit of a twist: Snake’s objective in Sneaking mode will be to collect dog tags from enemy soldiers’ bodies. At his disposal are all his nifty gadgets such as the Optocamo or Solid Eye and even a player controlled Metal Gear MKII. The other players will be divided into two teams that will fight each other for the right of taking out Snake and scoring points for themselves. This game mode seems to be a very nice way of simulating what’s happening on the single player mode from a multiplayer standpoint. Hopefully it will encourage sneaking more than the original mode.

At a glance
Metal Gear Online is still very much in development but it is starting to look good. If the developers don't forget that Snake fans want to sneak, this may be a milestone online experience.
