You are able to play the game cooperatively with a friend over Xbox Live. Every player will be playing as Baldur but there is no need to worry about questing together with a carbon copy of your own character. For starters, there are six different pieces of armor to equip, nine classes of melee and nine classes of ranged weaponry available in the game. There are literally thousands of different weapons ranging from cannons and laser rifles to dual wielding swords and massive staves. Because of this enormous variety it would highly improbable for you to run into someone who looks very much like you, especially after you have played a few hours.
The nine different types of melee weapons will all handle differently as you would expect a pair of short swords to feel differently than a two-handed hammer. Some of the more powerful armors and weapons can be ‘found’ by picking up blueprints dropped by foes. You can take these blueprints to a special store where -after paying a fee- a new weapon will be created for you. It is possible to equip runes to your weapons to enhance various aspects. The runes may for example affect reload times on a semi-automatic, add a splash damage modifier to a grenade launcher, or simply add additional damage points to a broadsword.
Not your average soldier
Adding further diversity to your choices, are the character classes. There are five different classes that you can choose from; Berserker, Bioengineer, Champion, Commando, and Defender. The Berserker can dish out loads of damage very quickly, but cannot wear the stronger armor types. The Bioengineer acts as the healer of the group except with a combat-focused twist. The Champion is the jack-of-all-trades and is competent with melee and ranged attacks. He has average health and average armor, but he specializes in critical strikes, and aerial combat. Once an enemy is popped up into the air, he is able to go to town on them, and finish them off before they ever hit the ground again. The Commander is the nuker of the group and specializes in ranged combat of all forms. Finally, the Defender is the tank of the group, has excellent health and can wear the heaviest armor. His tradeoff is that he has very minimal damage dealing capabilities.
Each of these classes will come with skill trees so that players can specialize in certain aspects of their class. Berserkers for instance, can focus on dual-wielding –or- on two-handed weapons. Allowing further customization is the option of choosing whether or not to cybernetically enhance your character. These enhancements provide additional options and may for instance gain you the ability to wield larger, more powerful weapons and armors. Staying fully human has other perks and it is not easy to chose which route to take.
All in all...
Too Human’s has a tumultuous history. It originally was slated for the Playstation, then the Gamecube and recently there have been problems between Silicon Knights and Epic over the Unreal 3 engine. Despite those problems, the game is nearing completion and it looks like it will be all that it was promised to be. If you are waiting for a good Action-RPG that is also a loot fest in the vein of Diablo, Too Human is not likely to disappoint.
