PS2 Sonic on the ride again
In 2006, Sonic Riders was met with a mixed response from critics, but Sega must have been pleased with the sales, as they have a sequel in the works for the Playstation 2 and Wii. In a game named Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, the world's fastest Hedgehog and friends return to their hover boards in search of the Shooting Star, an artifact said to control gravity itself. Why Sonic wants the Shooting Star hasn't been revealed yet, but, as it happens, his rivals, the Babylon Rouges, also want to get their paws/wings/whatever on it. And so, in the time honoured tradition of video games, they decide to settle their dispute with a series of futuristic races.
New skills and tricks to try
As in the first game, the races will encourage the use of tricks to gain speed boosts to get to the front of the pack. In addition to this, Sega is introducing two new moves – Gravity Control and Gravity Dive. Both of these skills are activated by obtaining Gravity Points by performing tricks and technical challenges. When enough points are obtained, the character enters a zero gravity environment and can unleash the new skills.
Gravity Dive is described as the 'ultimate speed boost,' as the character creates a black hole that pulls him from his board and through the air at high speed with the ability to grind mid air objects.
Gravity Control, on the other hand, allows players to effectively change the orientation of the track – if you want to ride the walls, just change the direction of the gravity – it's as simple as that. This is set to open up shortcut possibilities, and could add some great depth and strategy to the tracks if used correctly.
Sega isn't dragging its heels when it comes to other additions to the game, having so far promised two new vehicles for the characters to ride – a motorcycle and a futuristic hovercraft. As well as the new vehicle choices, the game will even allow the vehicles to change mid race. This means that if the situation calls for a motorcycle, and you're currently riding a hover board, you can transform the vehicle and change your style.
Upgrades to customise your vehicle
Not content to leave the renovations at that, Sega has also confirmed that there will be over 40 ways to upgrade the vehicles, allowing every player to have a unique custom ride. Not much has been revealed about this feature yet, other than rumours that there will be specific upgrades for character classes (more on those later). Of course, we all know how companies like to throw stats around, so only time will tell how much difference each upgrade will make.

As of yet, surprisingly little is revealed of the game, although one may ask whether it is really necessary to reveal much since we all know what the game is about: fast, slick racing. |
