Units
As every good army commander knows, an army’s strength lies in the skill of its soldiers. The same is true with Battalion Wars, where you need to figure out how to use all your units well in order to win. In Battalion Wars, troops are divided into four ‘classes’: grunts, tanks, aircraft and battleships. Grunts (foot soldiers) are the most numerous of all the unit types and can wield a wide variety of weapons. They are also the speediest and most maneuverable of all the unit groups and they can swim, although in water their weapons are useless.
The vehicles appear less often and in smaller quantities, but are much more fun than grunts, mainly due to their pure destructive force. It is extremely satisfying to destroy masses of grunts with missiles and it’s always a good idea to take a number of the speedier vehicles with you if you’ll need heavy firepower. The slower vehicles are more well-suited to defense and their extraordinarily high damage ratio makes them sure to keep an area safe from invaders.
Global Warfare
The most promising addition to Battalion Wars 2 is the multiplayer; both online and offline. You can play head-to-head against a friend in a number of game modes, including Assault, Skirmish and Capture the Flag. Assault is a fairly straightforward affair; one player defends his base while the other player tries to capture it within the time limit. Skirmish plays a lot like Assault, except with no time limit. This mode allows players to give their strategy more thought, and promises to deliver some very interesting matches. Capture the Flag supports up to four players at once, although official rules have yet to be released to the public. If you don’t feel like fighting your friends, that’s okay. Battalion Wars 2 also features a co-op mode which can be played with a friend locally or via a Wi-Fi Connection. However, no other details of this mode have been released so far.
While the original Battalion Wars may be doomed to sink into obscurity, the sequel looks to be another triple-A Wii title. The unique blend of strategy and action make this game unlike anything on the system, and for fans of Nintendo’s Wars series, the October 29th release date can’t come soon enough.
