Weather Control (cntd.)

When playing, you don’t actually control Dewy. Instead, you tilt the world like you would in Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz, Mercury Meltdown Revolution or Kororinpa Marble Mania. But the big draw in Dewy’s Adventure is Dewy’s magical environmental manipulation abilities. Using the D-Pad, you can -for a limited time- either heat up or cool down the world, causing Dewy to turn into steam or a block of ice respectively. As a block of ice, Dewy is much more difficult to control, but has a much higher attack power. As steam, Dewy can shoot lightning, but cannot be moved by tilting the controller –you will have to wait for a gust of wind to push him in the right direction. The heat-up/cool-down mechanic plays a big part in the game. An example; At one point Dewy is fighting a giant lizard boss who attacks with his tongue. Dewy freezes everything and the lizard’s tongue gets stuck on the ground, allowing Dewy to dish out pain.

Dewy’s powers manipulate more than just the temperature. You can also cause earthquakes by shaking the controller side to side or wind gusts by fanning the controller up and down. As you can see, Dewy has quite a few tricks up his sleeve.

Multiplayer

Once you have finished with the main quest, you still have a multiplayer mode you can enjoy. In multiplayer, you can still make wind gusts and earthquakes, and what appear to be multiplayer-exclusive power-ups are abundant. Also included is a level editor, which should be much deeper than the Elebits one. Although there is no WiiConnect24 planned, I feel it is safe to assume that there will be an online map trader.

Take your time!

One of the biggest problems with Elebits was that, in the rush to get it out for launch, the presentation was sub par. Graphics were not up to scratch, and the music wasn’t exactly ‘Best Original Score‘-winning material. But Dewy’s Adventure promises to change all that. It has got an extra nine months development time, perfect to add that finishing polish to the game. Already it is looking to be one of the prettier titles on the Wii, and even with just one song released to the public, the music is sounding much better as well. With two months left to develop, I think we can expect big things from Dewy and crew.

Just like last year’s Elebits, Konami has gone all out in creating a unique experience built from the ground up for the Wii. Even if Elebits wasn’t your cup of tea you should keep an eye out for this game, as it is shaping up to be another Wii classic.

At a glance
With Dewy's Adventure, Konami once again has the guts to try something new and different, taking full advantage of Wii's new controls.
